Help! Where to look near Brent?
« on: October 26, 2005, 04:36:23 AM »
My husband recently accepted a position working for the borough of Brent. Does any one know anything about this part of London? Do you have any suggestions on places to live?

We would like to rent a 1 bedroom flat and we can't afford much.  I'm thinking about 750 pounds a month and that might be pushing it. Will it be possible for us to find a 1 Bdrm flat in a safe area for that price? I checked out Gumtree and Loot, but I have no clue about the areas that are listed. Most of the flats in our price range that I did recognize, were in areas that were mentioned as "rough" in other threads.

I don't have to be in a super nice flat, but I do not want to be scared to walk around. I guess I am just getting nervous about everything. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

You'll have a tough time finding a 1 bedroom for that price in Brent borough, especially if you want to live in an area you feel very safe walking around at night.  But you could get a decent sized studio flat...I'd look in Cricklewood, Kilburn & Willesden Green...I live in Kilburn & love it...there are some tougher places but overall it's not as bad as some people think (same for Cricklewood & WG).  I could tell you about a few areas in those towns that would be okay.
p.s.  Kilburn & Willesden Green is in Brent though Cricklewood is not...but it's one of the next towns over.  There are tons of buses in those areas.  You might also have your hubby ask people at work for suggestions.

Thanks for the suggestions! It helps to have a few names of areas to look for, since right now I am totally clueless. I thought I was being pretty optimistic for a 1 bedroom at that price, but I'm sure we could manage a studio. My husbands job will put us in a hotel for 2 weeks, so I'm just afraid we will be in a rush to find a place and choose the wrong area. It would suck to get somewhere we didn't like because with the price of rent and a six week deposit, we probably won't be able to move again for a year!

You could always ask for a 6 month lease...they sometimes will give this.  If for any reason you can't find a place in those two weeks, just let the board know...lots of times people have an extra room they can rent for a short while to help out.  Let me know when you arrive and I'll meet y'all up for a drink.
