Seemingly hopeless situation
« on: February 29, 2012, 09:27:00 PM »
I seem to be posting here a lot lately. But I am having a rough life as of late (like everyone) and I just feel like nothing is ever going to happen for me. I apparently can't go to the college I wanted to go to. Because my HS diploma was a ripoff, I was schooled at home. Found out from the college that it is not an accredited diploma. So, now I can't go to college, like I had planned and hoped I would. I have to find a GED program. I don't want to do it at home, I've spent 7 years of "home-schooling" at home. My mom didn't teach me anything and lied to the state saying she was teaching myself and my brother.

So, here I am 20 years old, in an LDR on top of it all, no job, no significant education. And I just want to scream and cry. I'm searching online for programs but every GED program seems to be you have to be 21 or older (uh? Does this make sense at all?). Which that'd be another year of doing nothing out of my life until I'm 21. I have only found one for people 18 and older, and of course it's in a different county so I'd have to pay extra fees which I am not sure I can afford. My boyfriend doesn't have a hugely paying job and I keep thinking of the future and what if we can't get married if we wanted to, all simply because we can't afford it? Or we can't ever live in the same country because we're too broke to do so?

I just feel like all this time as wasted, and massively cheated, all because my mother didn't care enough about her children to get them properly educated. On top of it all, I really wanted to visit my boyfriend in June. I have just enough saved up to visit him if I wanted. If I don't have at least an education program to come back to... there's no way an IO will let me through. I am just so depressed at my situation. I know it seems like I'm drowning in my self-pity, which I kind of am. It's just hard and I feel like I'm at the end of my rope. :\\\'(

I hope you are feeling better.

It depends on your state, but many require school districts to provide education until the student is 21 or gains a degree, so perhaps you can't find any programs because technically your school district should still be educating you?

I'd call the district and find out.

I don't know what state you are in, but I would advise you, if it's possible, to look into HSED (High School Equivalency Diploma) rather than GED.  Apparently it's better quality and more widely accepted.  My brother dropped out of high school and eventually got his HSED, now he's at a good state university.  He got his HSED in Wisconsin; I'm not sure if it's available in all states, but it's worth a look.

You are obviously intelligent, you write well and are able to express your ideas effectively.  I'm sure that you will eventually sort yourself out and get a good education.  Try not to get too down on yourself :).

Have you looked into a two year community college? They might be more forgiving on the diploma front. Once you have a two year degree, you should be able to get into a four year school with no issues. *hugs* Good luck.

Looking at community colleges would also be my suggestion.

It's not hopeless. I'm sure you'll work it out. Good luck! Don't despair.

I third the Community College idea. They offer remedial classes and such....so if you are a bit weak in algebra or what-have-you you can catch up. They are usually quite a bit less expensive too.
I just hope that more people will ignore the fatalism of the argument that we are beyond repair. We are not beyond repair. We are never beyond repair. - AOC

If youre under 21, you should be able to enroll into a local night school program and either finish your high school Local or Regents diploma or theyll be able to help you get your GED. You might have to go back to the school you left, or a near by school district, in order o complete your course work but you should be able to attend. I went to school with a few kids who had to drop out due to a various reasons (pregnancy, family, etc) and were able to graduate a year or two behind by attending night school classes. I would see if you can get in contact with your old high school and see what they say is eligible for you.

Good luck.

Don't stress... I'm sure you could still get through fine. I live at home with my parents and I stopped going to community college when I met my BF and started trying to move to the UK. I have a job that I've been at for six years. I have no problems getting through the border, I've visited 4 times and told them I have a job in the US.

Do you work? If not, could you get a job?

Hey thanks so much to everyone for the replies, I really appreciate it and I'm trying to not get so depressed. It feels like my life is like groundhog's day, ya know? Anyways, I have checked into the Community College, even they won't accept me. Which is a pretty massive bummer. Can't even get into a community college, how sad. I filled out my application, my fafsa, called and they just said no. They used to have a GED program at their community college but that is no longer in practice. Not sure why they got rid of it, but it is a huge let down. I'll just have to keep looking. I did have a job, but the job required a HS diploma, which, I thought mine was legitimate so I said I had one. They didn't look into it and I got hired. But after working there for a while (it was at a daycare) they were breaking a lot of laws.

As far as making sure people had the qualifications (IE. I didn't and they had me take care of 7+ kids alone along with a child with down syndrome which I had no training with) And I didn't wanna go down with the ship when they eventually get shut down, so I decided to quit. I guess I'll just have to keep my chin up and keep looking, soooo frustrating. Also, just to let everyone know I am in the state of NY.

This is a good read, I think you will find you can take the GED test, you might just need to study for it on your own- but I don't think you will find that a huge problem-- or you might be able to find an online course to study for it.

Just did a quick search-- would say you would want to search for reviews etc to see if this place is any good but:

http://www.passged.com/ here is a site to help you study and take practise tests-- I think it says it costs $189-- I am sure there are other sites out there.

edited to add:  Here is a free site with ged study help
