UK kid's books, age 3 - recs?
« on: August 23, 2011, 04:19:58 PM »
Hello all! We've a 3 y.o. and therefore a lot of 3 y.o. friends back in the states. We're getting a few books to mail back for birthdays, and wanted to know if you guys have come across any great British kids books, that you didn't necessarily encounter back home? We've mainly come across our new favorites in the local library.  We like creatively illustrated and good stories that are fun.  Plus, if they have some fun English words/sayings or concepts, all the better for our American friends.

To start the list going (more suggestions please! :) ):
Manky Monkey
This Rabbit Bleongs to Emily Brown
Eliza and the Moonchild
Gruffalo (I gather this may be 'of course!')
Tiger Comes to Tea

And others that I forgot to write down, of course, and with the summer holidays can't find in the library again!
Thanks!
-Mo

Meg and Mog series by Helen Nicoll and Jan Pienkowski
Poppy Cat series by Lara Jones
Calm Down Borris by Sam Lloyd and Stella Gurney (they have other puppet books that are equally as good)
Owl Babies by Martin Waddell (if you look carefully you can find a Mummy and 3 baby owl set - my daughter's pre-school has this book as  a story sack)
Winnie the Witch series by Valerie Thomas and Korky Paul
The Bog Baby by Jeanne Willis and Gwen Millward (they have other books which are equally as good too)
Five Minutes' Peace by Jill Murphy
Maisy series by Lucy Cousins (well, just about anything from Lucy Cousins is great)
Guess What I Found in Dragon Wood by Timothy Knapman and Gwen Millward

I think I've suggested enough.  :)

My 2.5 year old loves the other books by the Gruffalo author, Julia Donaldson.  Just off the top of my head there is:

Zog (all about dragons)
The whale and the snail
The fish who cried wolf
