6 months to move to US once visa is approved?
« on: June 06, 2011, 12:43:47 PM »
Okay, so I just got married and we are looking into the DCF process. My husband is a UKC and I am a USC. We had planned to relocate after getting married to the US, but are also now thinking about trying for children.

As I understand once your US visa is approved you have to move to the US within 6 months. My question is...does this have to be the "BIG" move? or could we enter the US once we have the visa for my husband, stay with family for a week or so, go back the the UK (and if pregnant have the baby in the UK) then make our real move after about 2-4 months?

My concern is that I do not want to make our "BIG" move whilst pregnant (mainly health insurance reasons) but I may have difficulty becomeing pregnant so I also don't really want to wait to start the DCF in case things don't work out baby-wise, we can at least get on with moving and starting up life in the US.

I'm not really sure what happens after you enter the US on a green card. Do you have to have a minimum initial stay or is it an average annual stay (i.e. live there X many of months out of the year)? Or do they even pay attention to you after you enter?

Many thanks!

You may want to ask this question on a UK to US forum (I believe one is "Dive into America" or something like that).

Once you get the green card and enter into the US, as long as you have permission to travel, which I'm sure you will, you can come and go as you please, as long as your not away from the US more than 1 year. After that, your green card becomes invalid.

My husband got his greencard in the summer of 2010. We then visited the US in Oct. 2010. He came back to the UK after a week and stayed here until Feb. He stayed in the US for a month but then came back to the UK. He is finally moving to the US next week - over a year after he got the greencard. Hope that helps.
