Bringing over gifts
« on: August 17, 2011, 04:28:53 AM »
I'm in the US right now visiting my parents.  My mom has given me a collection of small enamel boxes that have been in the family for a while.  There are about 30 boxes and if you were to buy them new, each one would be about $50-100.  She's also given me some jewelry that isn't more than $200 - again, stuff that has been in the family for a while.  They're very sentimental to me as I was allowed to play with them when I was a child, and now that I'm an adult and starting my own family, my mom has passed them along to me.

I would like to bring them to the UK when I go back this Saturday; however, I'm wondering if there will be any issues at customs?  Will I need to do anything special about them?

They'll be in my carry on baggage to prevent any breakage.

Thanks in advance for any advice or information!

Effectively they are used personal item, I can't imagine you needing to declare them. Unless some of that jewelry is antique and made of ivory. ;)

The only issue would be if you were planning to sell them or bringing over an amount of items that could be mistaken for sellable stock. You might want to declare then, but that would have to be a massive amount of jewelry. ;)

Declaring goods to customs
August 2008 - Tier 4 - Student Visa
February 2010 - Tier 1 - PSW
January 2012 - FLR(M)
June 2014 - ILR (finally!)
