Shipping Beading Supplies
« on: August 17, 2011, 10:08:27 PM »
I was thinking about shipping my beading supplies using USPS, instead of shipping it all by slow boat. I figure it will give me something to do while I'm job searching. I have probably $1500 to $2000 worth of sterling silver components, tools, beads, etc. It all fits into one <50lb box. However, I'm very concerned they will slap me with some kind of VAT/customs fees given the value of the contents. I don't make any jewelry for money (yet), it's just a hobby. If I ship it from me to me, will I still possibly have an issue with VAT?

I would mark it used personal items just to be sure.

Would it make anysense to bring it as excess baggage? That way you could explain that it was items you purchased for your own personal use?

I brought my huge collection of glass beads and assorted other  supplies in my luggage. I didn't have any issue bringing it in.

It's not a bad idea to bring it as excess baggage. I hadn't thought of that. The only issue I would have will be handling at least 2 large suitcases, 2 carry-ons, 2 cat carriers and then possibly this ~45lb box (18"x18"x18") through the airport.  :P I imagine it could become difficult to handle it all.
