National Insurance Number?
« on: August 25, 2011, 03:35:17 PM »
Not sure if I'm posting this in the correct forum. Apologies if I'm not!

My husband and I filled out my NINo form and received it about 2 weeks ago. I made for certain that I put my name down exactly as it appears on my passport (First, Middle, Maiden) as was advised on the form. In the section where it asks you to list any other last names you may be known by, I put my married name. I also enclosed (as advised) a photocopy of the picture page of my passport as well as a photocopy of my settlement visa.

When I received my NINo, it was addressed to First, Middle, Married.

I'm now confused. When applying for jobs and registering with a GP, do I put my married name as my surname? Or do I put my maiden name (the one on my passport and visa)?

You can use your married name. DW has her passport in maiden name with spusal visa in which says spouse of <my name> so that includes the married name.
Her NI number and NHS etc is in her married name. She uses her married name her for everything except when we are booking flights.

Heh. They totally screwed my name up on my NIN. I've been trying to drop my middle names (get that, names plural) in favor of using my old last name as my middle name, and they resurrected bits of my old name.

Oh, well. My US Social Security is in a nickname nobody's called me since I was six.

My passport and visa are still in my maiden name, but I used my married name for my NINo and with my bank, with my GP and at my job. The only thing you can't use your married name for is if you book travel (always has to be in the same name as your passport) or any visa applications unless you change your passport first.

Thank you so much for your responses!

The bank we went to to set up my account wouldn't allow me to put an account under my married name - it had to be under my passport/ID name and I have to bring in proof that I live here. Such a hassle!

Probably the most difficult thing for DW was getting a bank account. Have you applied for a UK provisional driving licence? I think DW did that in her married name and used that as her id

Mimibeth, what they did for me at my bank (Lloyds TSB) was open the account in the name that was on my passport (maiden) and then submit a name change after it was opened (she took a copy of the marriage certificate).  THEN she ordered my bank card.  See if that's doable at your bank.

You can also apply for your provisional drivers license under your married name. You will be asked to send your passport and your marriage certificate as proof (there may be other things as well to send).

The next step after your bank account has been opened is to go to Experian and/or any other credit agency and view your credit report and send a Notice of Correction, stating that you are not a UK Citizen, so you cannot be a part of the Electoral register. But you are a citizen and have a visa.

The sooner you do this, the better, as it is a tool to help you start building credit.  Or else you'll tend to be declined because they can't prove who you are (i'm oversimplifying here, but it boils down to it).
