How much did you need?
« on: August 17, 2011, 05:57:22 PM »
This question may be posted somewhere; but I know everyone will have a different answer. How much did you take with you when coming to the UK?

My plan is to come over next year with enough to cover 6 months rent at an average flat plus extra savings. I will be working remote for a while and I have a comfortable salary here; but doing the currency conversion- it does not look so comfortable there!

I don't mind a flat share, except I have a dog and I work remote, which not everyone wants (someone working form home or liking a dog). I am just wondering if there is a minimum that most people would suggest. My plan is to come over at the end of March; however tacking on an additional month for saving would not hurt me. I am already getting heat about not being there for my sister's Master graduation (no one went for mine but anyhow).

As always, thoughts and advice are appreciated.

Jilly

Hi Greeyes4u32.

What visa are you arriving on?  Keep in mind, if you're only coming as a visitor, then you're not going to be allowed to work even if the company is not in the UK and the work can be done remotely.  Even voluteer work is a big no-no.

That said, if it is a visitor visa you'll be arriving on, then you would definitely need enough money to sustain yourself for the duration of your trip (lodging, food, transport, etc.).

Good luck!   :)

Hello! Sorry I should have been more clear. I plan on applying for British citizenship by descent (mum is from England) and getting a British passport prior to my leaving. That said, I plan to work remotely; but with crazy hours, I would like to try and look for work so that I can stay without working friday nights until midnight.  ::)

Nice!   ;D

In that case, I would think you would just need enough to get yourself set up (moving costs, any deposits, etc).  Since you can work remotely allowing for a steady income to come in, then you're ahead of the curve of what most people have (I believe) when they arrive.

Others with much more experience who have already done this move will chime in, I'm sure.  They'd be much better than I to give detailed advice.

Good luck with the move!   :)

I'm trying to figure out the same thing! I'm hoping to come over on a spousal visa. UK husband. Right now after visa and plane ticket I've got about $1500.  My husband is in a bit of a sticky financial situation so any input is appreciated!
Married March 29th.
Sent in Application and Biometrics Tuesday October, 4th.
Email saying consulate had received application October 7.
Visa issued October 13!
Moving to Leeds November 10th!
