Does anyone have experience with using a deposit scheme?
« on: September 22, 2011, 12:32:03 PM »
Hi guys,

My landlord was really nice to me and said that I've left the place very tidy and that I'd get my deposit back. Then when it came time for me to input into the DPS system that I want the deposit back she all of a sudden decided I owe money in bills.

So instead of disputing this with me on their system which I would love to do, she is harassing me with phone calls and emails and not responding on the actual online system. I've stopped picking up the phone now because she keeps telling me random calculations that I owe. I've asked her to send me proof in the forms of bills but she sent me one and based on that bill, she owes us money for paying too much bill contributions if anything!!

Basically the agreement was the upstairs neighbours (who had the majority of the house while we lived in the basement) had to pay all the bills in their name and we contributed £65/month for everything. She said they paid 2/3 and we pay 1/3. Ok fair enough. We've paid every month. So what's the problem? Am I wrong here?

If anyone has had to claim their deposit back via dps, can anyone please clue me in here? What should I do next? If she claims that I owe her but not proving what she says?

Sorry this is long. I'm sitting here crying after listening to a mean voicemail from her(I'm overly sensitive).

Do you have anything in writing about the split of bill payment? If so, it should be pretty simple to prove that you've paid the £65/mo and owe nothing for bills.

My angsty landlady turned out to not even have bothered to put my money into the DPS!  >:( (She claimed she didn't have my e-mail address, but she obviously did as we'd e-mailed in the past.) So no advice about how to dispute anything with getting your deposit back, sorry. :( I have heard it can take a few weeks (2-4?) to get the money back, and that's probably without disputes.

Yep it's in writing that we pay 65/month or 1/3 if that ends up being more. It's ended up being less than 65/month based on the statement she's showed me! So I can't believe she's doing this to me right now.

I'm sorry she never put yours in a scheme. Did you get it back eventually?

Yeah, the plus side was that she could just do a bank transfer back to me, so it only took a week or so. And at least she was only angsty about "violating my lease" (by having a dog with hair, apparently), not nitpicking the amount of the deposit she'd keep. So that was a bonus.

Lol goodness! What a ridiculous LL! But atleast she gave you your money back I suppose.

I'm still fighting for mine. She sent me a sad voicemail last night saying she's never been in this situation before and that she just wants me to pay up and have this nightmare be over. That's funny because it's a freakin nightmare for me too and I'd love for her to either show me why I owe money or just give it back to me. It's getting so ridiculous!

How is it a "nightmare" for her when she's out, what, £65 or something? I assume your deposit is way more than that, so that seems extra melodramatic of her.

My evil LL did keep £57 of my deposit because supposedly my cat scratched up the furniture (couldn't see any on one piece, but I know he did the other). Since it was such a small amount, I didn't really mind too much.

It is indeed a lot more than that :(. She's one of those people that seems really nice through the whole tenancy but tries to bleed you dry for anything possible after the tenancy. I feel like she's getting a kick out of this because she owns so much property that I don't really see her needing this small chunk of money.

£57 is just so damn petty! LL's make me so mad  >:(
