Hello - Boston to London
« on: August 24, 2011, 11:45:43 PM »
Hello!

I stumbled upon this board a few weeks ago while trying to figure out some visa questions, and I figured it was time to say hi! This seems like a great board, everyone has been very friendly and helpful.

If all goes as planned (which, I gather, it never does ;) ), I'll be moving to London in the spring from Boston by way of Ecuador. My boyfriend has dual citizenship between Ecuador and Italy; we're trying for an EEA Family Permit. We're moving to Quito for few months and then hopefully on to London, where we hope to stay for the foreseeable future. I'm excited about the actual moving part, but worried about this complicated visa process. I'm glad to have found somewhere to talk to people in similar situations!

Thanks for the welcomes and well wishes. The planning process is in full swing at this point and I am buried under a mountain of paperwork for various visas. I wish it was as easy as just getting on a plane!

Yes, I have been to Italy and I loved it. We're hoping to make a few trips there to visit my boyfriend's extended family that still lives there once we get to the UK. (IF we get to the UK... the more I read the more I feel like this visa process could go very wrong!)

Well, remember that this is a place people come for advice when things go wrong, so you see a disproportionate number of gone wrong applications in here.

Many congratulations to you! I just got my EEA Family Visa (husband Icelandic, lives in London) and it wasn't horrible. Just a lot of paperwork and diligent reading and re-reading of information. If I can answer any questions, let me know and I will be glad to help.

One detail you can consider now is that all documentation has to be  in English or be translated by an official translator. This one got me because we had to provide a certified by the Icelandic gov't copy of his Icelandic passport. We did this in Reykjavik and I failed to noticed that the authorizing stamp was in Icelandic. He had to make a dash to the embassy in London and overnight a copy with a stamp in English. So I guess just watch out for stuff like that and just ask for everything to be in English up front.... and ask like six times because people forget stuff. It might have been ok, because the stamp had like three words on it, but I sure wasn't going to take chances!
Sometimes I amaze even myself.
