Received an English check in America
« on: October 03, 2011, 12:29:33 PM »
I just received a check from HMRC the other day for overpaying on my taxes. I wasn't expecting this check and they mailed it to my new American address. Any ideas on how I can cash it? I think my only option may be to contact them and see if they can deposit into my English bank account which is still open instead... I don't think I would be able to cash it at a bank here- am I right in assuming that?

Your bank can probably cash it, but there will likely be fees on top of the exchange rate.  So, depending on the size of the check, it may or may not be worth it.  You could also contact your UK bank and find out if they'll accept a postal deposit, and then just mail them the check.  I've done that with U.S. checks I've received in the U.K.
