moving/shipment logistics, advise please
« on: October 07, 2011, 05:06:42 PM »
We will need to stay in a hotel upon arrival and stay for a short amount of time as possible. Since all letting agents are telling me basically the same information, is there a need to ring up all 100 of them in any one area from here? I guess we call them when we get there. Some say to email a few weeks in advance.

It is possible that we will have to take a less than ideal place for six months and move again. Trust me, I wouldn't move again in six months if I could function easily in the original place.

OK, when the household is packed and shipped and we won't have an address to receive it, how would this work?

Also, if we aren't staying in the first place beyond six months, what do we do with our stuff. Unpack and pack and move it all again or put it in storage near us?

Thanks!

When we moved, we stayed in a hotel for about 2 weeks while we looked for and renting a flat.  We contacted letting agents when we got there.  Our lease was for one year with an option to end it after 6 months so that can be negotiated.  As for shipping, we did shipping by sea which left mid- Dec and didn't arrive until early Feb so they didn't get the delivery location until our things got there.  Hope that helps!

Things come on the market and go off again so quickly, there's no point to looking until you're ready to do paperwork and whatnot.

First time we moved we just wandered into an estate agent's office in the neighborhood we wanted to live in and asked to see what they had.  We found a place we liked that day.  Next two times we moved we found places on the web, set up appointments with the individual agents, and went barreling around the countryside all day meeting up with them.  This took a few days in total spread out over 2 weeks or so.

Yes, thanks! An estate agent told me most were 6 months but I'm glad to know it is negotiable especially, God willing, there is a chance that we love and can function in the first place! The shipping info is great too! Nothing like a bit of good information, something useful and positive!

Thank you! This sounds hopeful indeed! The estate agents say that they will line up viewings in an organised manner so as to hold down taxi costs. (We can't drive). Do you folks think we should rent a car for a couple of weeks that my cousin can drive? You have to know that we could possibly be lost 95% of the time! Since I have to buy a load of things would a car help instead of trying to get it home by bus? I am having a bit of a difficult time trying to balance holding start-up costs down with needs of physical limitations. It is because I have never moved an entire home and all new circumstances. I hope I learn quick!
