Recommendations on scouting trip

We are moving to London right after Christmas.  Does anyone have any recommendations on when I should plan my scouting trip for?  We are looking for a rental that begins mid December or the first of the year and we want to come when we will have the most selection of rental properties.  How far in advance do you look for places?

I forgot to mention we are looking to rent a house or a terraced/townhouse, not a flat.

I haven't made the move yet but from what I picked up in previous posts that agents don't particular like dealing with ppl unless they know you are about to move and can move in right away.

I could be wrong of course but i just remember some posts that i read last night in older threads about it.

Houses were we live get taken within a few hours of being put on the market.  So I wouldn't go unless you were planning on pay the rent from the time you see it.
