FAFSA- Tax section- Need help with UK Citizen tax info, please!
« on: September 16, 2011, 05:56:46 PM »
Decided to post this here, too, since no one in the Student Lounge seemed able to help and this is tax related- hopefully someone can help! Thanks!

I went through the thread to check that no one else has had this problem, I didn't go back all the way, but to the teens when it was 2008... so, hopefully, I'm not repeating!

I know it may be a little late, but I'm trying to fill out the FAFSA application, and I'm getting very confused on the finance part. I was married in 2010; I filed my US taxes separately and my husband is a UK citizen. Right now, all I have to use for him is his P60 End of Year Certificate- is this okay to use or do I need something else? It doesn't have a lot of info on it... I'm at the section where it's asking for income tax, exemptions, etc and I'm going crazy with this! ugh!

Do you mean FAFSA - Free Application for Federal Student Aid?

At least ANY UK tax info could have been of some help; I haven't had to file UK taxes yet, so I don't know what the forms look like and how they're generally done. And, my husband is in the UK military and he said they do it for him. So I really have no idea as to what I need to be LOOKING AT.

I believe you are not trying to fill out FAFSA for your husband who is neither a U.S. citizen, nor a Green card holder? To receive Federal Student Aid, a student has to be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. If you are filing for yourself and need to provide your spouse income information, you have an option to choose "did not file form 1040" and provide an estimate of his gross income and taxes paid/owed. This information is shown on p-60. You would need p-60 for two years to come up with the averaged amount for the calendar year. If you file FAFSA online, enter 0 in boxes that do not apply just to be able to proceed to the next page.
