Movin to the UK from Idaho!
« on: July 01, 2011, 12:53:29 AM »
My wife and I are moving to the UK in the next 2 years (plenty of time to wrap up here and get prepped for there). She'll most likely be attending school for her Masters and potentially her Ph.D. We think we'll have the please of living in Glasgow, but it's not set in stone quite yet, but we're shootin for Scotland somewhere.

We're 26 (myself) and she is 25, we Both have bachelor's degrees, she has 2 I suppose. But only because she's awesome. I am a Network Engineer and have very Current certifications and field work experience, so we think we'll be able to fit right in.

We're moving partially because of my wife's Ed program, but jointly because it is time to get out of Idaho. We've been saying it for years but we finally took a trip there on our honeymoon for 3 weeks and fell in love. So the next step is learning everything we need to not make a misstep.

Welcome! Welcome!  I came here from Idaho Falls and live in South Wales.  We're always happy to see other Idahoans as there are only a few of us around.

We're from Boise too! Both Capital High kids, though she attended Eagle High for a while. She lived in Eagle until High School and I lived in the Capital Area my younger life.

How was the transition? Were there many surprises?

Hi Pitmandan,

I'm another Idahoan in the UK, from near Moscow now down in Plymouth, Devon, almost as far away from your plans for Scotland as possible.  :)

I would say in terms of surprises, be ready for people to not only know of Idaho, but to have been there too, or have cousins living in Idaho.  I went to college on the East Coast and had to repeatedly explain to my well-educated friends that I was not from the Midwest, that I was from the same timezone as California and WEST of the Rockies.  I got out of the habit of saying 'Idaho' when asked where I was from because people usually just thought Iowa or Ohio.  Here, people think I'm being evasive when I say, "The Northwest, along the Rocky Mountains."  When I do say Idaho, they respond with, "Ah, yes Idaho!  I drove a camper van there/my cousin moved there, very big into skiing/I hear it's very beautiful, I'd love to go there/. . ."  Obviously not everyone, and maybe some people are just being polite, but it does make me wonder at how about American geography when Americans don't know their own states and foreigners do.

See, for me, it has been the opposite.  I've been saying the Rocky Mountain region because hardly anyone knows Idaho.  They don't tend to know where the Rockies are, but they've at least heard of them.

Its funny to see how we all perceive different places in life for good and bad, I did the opposite I was born in the Sheltland Isle ( north coast of Scotland ) then lived in Suffolk UK until I immigrated to Boise ID  8) 6 years ago with my wife and 2 daughters its been an interesting move .

That is funny, why did you end up moving? And why Boise? I grew up here and have noticed that everyone's reason is different. Is the adjustment to living much different? My biggest concern is not realizing that I need to look out for something, like a type of house or place to live or highway, much like how awful the freeway west is at 4pm-6pm.

Thanks, and hope Boise is treating you well!

I moved out because as kid we moved a lot (my Dad was in the Air Force ) so I got to move around the world not like nowadays, so I've lived in the Far East (Hong Kong) and in Cyprus in the Middle East so I like heat. My sister moved here (Boise) with her Husband (Retired US Military ) so that was another reason.
England is expensive V.A.T is 21%, gas is around $7-$8 gallon but its imperial so that's 5 liters where as US is 3.78 Liters. House's are expensive but its all in keeping with the cost of living there but they are brick or stone built and will last a life time our first house was built in the late 1700's.
Scotland is a beautiful place when the sun shines but can be very depressing with the weather just check out the average amount of sun it gets each year and it will give you an idea. The weather here is so much better with four definite seasons but to some people that is not a priority.
We live of Maple Grove so we don't have that nightmare drive out of town each day and my sister moved out to the East of town to avoid the traffic chaos going west to Nampa, Caldwell.
We came out to the Boise in each season over the years so we got a good feel for it, and if you can afford to visit England likewise it will give you a good sense of what you are moving too  :)

Hi All!

I posted in the moving section first because I found this site while on my quest for information to relocate.

I am not from Idaho but my fiance is (Emmett/ Meridian, ID) and we currently live in Eugene, OR. I am from Michigan, but don't like to admit it :)

We are hoping to relocate to the U.K. but absolutely nothing is even remotely for sure yet. If we relocate it will have to include him beginning his Doctoral program in Clinical Psych., which is a wee bit complicated (see relocation post :)).

Hoping to be part of the community while we figure out this process!
