How to ship stuff?
« on: December 02, 2011, 03:28:26 PM »
So I *should* be filing for my fiance' visa in February sometime.
I was pricing how much it would be for 5 checked bags and NO WAY *KLM airline* I plan on taking 2 Big suitcases plus a decent size carry on. I'm a clothes fiend and They don't have any stores that carry the brand I live in. I plan on bugging my parents to bring me an extra suitcase a piece when they come for the wedding but I like to ship more stuff. Since I cannot live without at least 6-7 pairs of shoes (Boots, flip flops and Sneakers) Plus My hoodies.  Whats the cheapest way to go about this? I refuse to pay 200 a pop for a extra suitcase.

I'm in the same situation and am currently moving from the UK temporarily, trying to figure out the cheapest shipping option. I'm leaving most of my items in the UK in my home, which I'm renting, or in a storage unit. So, I only have a small amount of extra items, but too much to take on the plane. From what I've found online, it seems like using an excess baggage company or a shipping company (Fedex, UPS, DHL, etc) is the best option. It's supposed to be cheaper to send your extra items via a shipping company than it is to pay for extra bags. I'd definitely recommend leaving extra luggage with family members and having them bring the bags over when the come for the wedding. Leave your out of season clothing behind and have it brought over later. Clothing is actually much better in the UK, so you may find that you'd rather buy clothing here than have your items sent over.

When I moved over here I had 3 large suitcases and a sea shipment. I flew on United and BMI, and when I checked in, I wasn't charged anything for my extra bag, so that was a bonus. I think I just got lucky, though. I was fine only having 3 bags and waiting 5 months for the rest of my belongings.

I'm in the same situation and moving over to England in January on a fiance visa.  After getting quotes from a few companies that were way out of my price range, I decided to leave most of my stuff at home.  I'm paying for an extra suitcase when I fly over and then paying my family members to bring an extra suitcase when they come for the wedding.  The rest I figure I can live without for awhile and just bring over slowly every time I come home to vist or when people come to visit me.  I wasn't too thrilled about it, but I'm much rather do that than shell out big bucks to have my stuff with me.

Those vacuum seal space saving bags hold a crap load of stuff. I moved over with 2 large roller duffel bags and my PC tower over 6 years ago and it worked. I was able to bag my extra heavy queen sized ikea duvet and pillows and they laid FLAT in the bag... It might not be help with the shipping of shoes, but at least help with bulky puffy things it should help out..
