I'm one of the moaners. I would've loved to do jury duty. But my county paid $15 A DAY to jurors. My employer wouldn't have paid me for those days. There's no way I could've afforded this. Maybe for a day-long trial, but if I'd gotten stuck in the middle of a trial that lasted days or weeks, I couldn't have managed. This is the reason most people where I'm from wanted to get out of it, because they simply couldn't afford it, not because they couldn't be arsed.

I was called twice, first time I didn't have to go :\\\'( and the second time I got picked for what turned out to be an 8 week long super huge drugs trial.  I was dancing for joy that I was chosen to fulfill this particular civic duty...what an honor it was to be able to participate in this country's judicial system up close. Better than on T.V. but not as dramatic.

I was called for jury duty back when I was still in college, but fortunately on summer break.  I was about 22 at the time and was on a case for a wrongful death suit.  The girl had gone in for jaw surgery and they took out her breathing tube too early and she wasn't responding and ended up dying.  Loads of lack of care and I hate to admit (in hindsight!) but it was one of the highest amounts awarded to a victim's family in the state of Alabama at the time.  The attorneys for the defense even tried to contact me a few times, once in person at my parents house, afterwards.  A bit like a John Grisham novel if you ask me.  I'd do it again in a heartbeat because it was fascinating to participate in the judicial system.

I got out of jury duty in Houston because I'd moved to the county over.  It was just a matter of making a phone call to say I moved outside of the county.

I just got an email from my mom saying I've been called for jury duty as well. Never been called before, but obviously I won't be able to make it to this one. My mom's going to call them and say that I live in the UK now, don't know if they'll want me to send any proof or not that I don't live there, but we'll see what they say.

I have been called many times but only had to go once. I just sat there all day. I'm from California and so even though it is a different county it might be the same for you. Your mom just has to call and say you don't live there anymore. If you don't live in the county, you can't serve on a jury. We never had to give any proof.

My mom did call to tell them that I've moved out of the country, and at first they wanted us to send a copy of my international drivers license. My mom explained that I don't have one since I don't drive here, and then they wanted to see a copy of my Delaware driver's license, don't know what that was supposed to prove, but when my mom told them it had expired since it was up for renewal this year and I'd already left the country, they looked up on their records and saw that it had, and they considered that proof, so I was excused, although my mom got a postcard a day or so later that I was excused but could still be called again *rolls eyes*
