How to dispose of metal?
« on: January 24, 2012, 12:11:19 PM »
We've disassembled our daughters' bunk bed and given them single beds, but now we have a bunch of metal pieces I don't know what to do with. Back in America I'd put them in the dumpster at my brother's apartment complex, take them to a junkyard, sell them at a scrapyard, put the smaller pieces in my own garbage, etc. Here, because we don't have a car, I have no way to get to a junkyard or scrapyard, and indeed I don't know if those places even exist in England.  :P I also don't know anywhere with a dumpster I could use, and my wife says the local garbagemen won't take the big metal pieces. Does anyone know how we can get rid of it all?

In our area, the Council will come and collect large items for a fee. I think they charge £15 for three large things. We have a car, so can generally get to the dump, but I've used the Council for big things that we can't lift or get into the car. To get our money's worth, though, we wait until we have three things for them. Try your Council website and see if there's anything there.

In our area, we leave it out the front of our house on the street or on the driveway  and within 5 minutes the pikeys have collected it.

If it's non-ferrous (ie: a magnet doesn't stick to it), you can get a surprising amount of money for it at a scrap metal dealer. We've got one about 5 min walk away, and it's totally worth our while to haul it down there. We got £60 for a (carrier-sized) bag of assorted old, cruddy copper pipes with all the old fittings still attached.

If you don't fancy doing that, get the council to collect it. In Southwark it's free.

Our council picks up large items for a 33 pound fee. Luckily they waive that fee if you're in receipt of certain benefits, and my wife gets child tax credits so it's now taken care of. :)

Pikey?  Really?
This has come up before and I realise some people may not be aware that it is an offensive term. I have decided instead of just deleting it through moderation to use this as a chance to be sure that people understand it is not an acceptable term to be used on this forum. There are many links I could put up which explain-- here is one:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/7446274.stm

The bottom line is that it is used as a very deragatory term towards the traveller community and the police consider it a racist term. As Americans in a new country we sometimes here terms used in an area where we live regularly and don't always realise the full meaning of the term-- I am giving the benefit of the doubt that this is the case in this situation. Please let's all refrain from using the term in the future-- (it will be deleted if used in the future- if anyone notices it please report to moderator) Thanks!
