Rye was allowed to call itself Rye Royal after Elizabeth I visited (persistent rumor has it some gold pieces changed hands). The charter is in the museum.
There's a little back road into town called Dead Man's Lane that was part of the queen's path. She stopped for a drink of water at what is still known as the Queen's Well. Every time we pass it, I can't resist barking, "stop here! One is thirsty!"
"One could murder a pint!"
"One needs to wet one's whistle!"
