Cranberry sauce. Candied yams or sweet potatoes (which are, frankly, a bit too much like pumpkin pie to be entirely fair). Dinner rolls.

To be honest, besides the turkey, I just cooked all my favorite things for Thanksgiving.

You know, turkey, bacon and whisky.

I agree with the addition of green bean casserole and cranberry sauce. BIL and family have made me a Thanksgiving dinner the past two years. The first year, a friend of theirs made me a pecan pie to go with it, and last year SIL gave it a try. Yum! In the States, my family generally has pumpkin, pecan and at least one type of fruit pie. I've tried explaining the concept of cooking enough for days of leftovers but they just don't quite get it here.  ::)

I tried to get some bean casserole done this year, but I just couldn't find the correct ingredients.  My local Waitrose (Harborne, Birmingham) said that I was the 5th or 6th person that day to ask for crispy dried onions!

The problems were many:  Couldn't find any tinned french-cut beans; Campbells (which I believe is Bachelor's here) - couldn't find the condensed cream of mushroom soup.  All I could find was either fully prepared cream of mushroom soup, or condensed low-cal regular mushroom soup.  I'll have another go this year though and hopefully bring that loveliness back to my table.

I get my crispy onions at Tesco or Asda. I forget what section they are in, but I think usually around the salad dressings?

I kind of make up my own green bean casserole, completely non traditional, but way yummier IMHO! I mix some bachelors cream of mushroom soup with lots of sour cream and grated romano cheese, plus salt, pepper, and whatever other seasonings I feel like and stir it in with the canned green beans. Top it with the crispy onions and plenty more cheese and bake until all bubbly and yummy. Everyone in my DH's family loves it. :)
Finally living with my Husband in London after 6 1/2 years together but apart... and loving my life!

I get my crispy onions from the pasta/salad bar at Morrisons. I have't quite gotten mine just as I like it, because of finding the right soup, but I won't give up.  ;D

I've done a non-traditional casserole myself. This recipe is what I've used the last few years, and my family has asked me to make it several times since then because not everyone likes the cream of mushroom soup:

I followed a couple of the suggestions to modify it, and it's yummy good! I hope I get the chance to introduce it to my OHs family this year.

I add a bit extra of the onions to the mix AND make sure that it is the full flavour condensed soup :)  Mine is turning out ok-good luck!!

In the States I always used full flavour Campbells soup and added extra onions. Here I haven't quite gotten the soup right, but still add extra onions. I think they are what really makes it taste so good.

Dh loves green bean casserole but he isn't a fan of mushrooms so we use condensed celery soup instead turns out just fine we think. ;)  :)  Dh & I have found the crispy onions at ALDIS as well there usually in a clear plastic tub. this will be our 3rd Thanksgiving here in the UK were usually back in the States for Thanksgiving most years but not this year sadly. :(  [smiley=sa3.gif] we wont be having our Thanksgiving till the Sunday after Thanksgiving since Dh has to work on Thanksgiving. we always have pumpkin pie when we have Thanksgiving here its just the of us 2 but lucky for me Dh doesn't like it so its all for me me lol. ;D [smiley=2thumbsup.gif]
