Golden Syrup is treacle too.  Black treacle is the stuff like molasses.  (So I learned from here the other month.)  But, if you ask for treacle in the UK you will get the dark stuff.

Treacle is the black stuff, however when saying treacle people usually mean Golden Syrup which isn't treacle! A treacle sponge is made with golden syrup etc.

The black stuff is generally used in baking.....I used it in making parkin.

Not around here they don't! Treacle is treacle and golden syrup is golden syrup! Maybe that's a regional thing?

Sorry, meant to say in Yorkshire. We refer to golden syrup as treacle and treacle as black treacle!

Well, that is what I thought until Weby J pointed out this Wikipedia article that states
Quote
Treacle is any syrup made during the refining of sugar[1] and is defined as "uncrystallized syrup produced in refining sugar".[2] Treacle is used chiefly in cooking as a form of sweetener or condiment.

The most common forms of treacle are the pale syrup that is also known as golden syrup and the darker syrup that is usually referred to as dark treacle or black treacle. Dark treacle has a distinctively strong flavour, slightly bitter, and a richer colour than golden syrup,[3] yet not as dark as molasses. Golden syrup is the main sweetener in Treacle Tart.

Huh. Thanks, everyone! So, the American-style syrup (for pancakes and such) is closest to golden syrup? I didn't really notice a huge flavor difference when I used it on the french toast. (Not the maple syrup- that I do know is different.)

Yes. And, in fact, they also do a maple-flavoured golden syrup, I'm told. I prefer real maple syrup (which is readily available), but I know a lot of people find the golden syrup version is a good substitute for US fake maple syrup.

Cool! Thanks, Chary. :) We tried the golden syrup when I was here last because it was the only kind of syrup we could find at all at Saino's. ;) Once I move, I'm going to have to find the secret maple syrup shops in London!

I use very little sugar anyway but used Muscovado for just about everything where I did use it. Love the molasses-y flavour  [smiley=heart.gif] Sometimes Demerara.
