please help unauthorised charges from my bank account/paypal
« on: November 16, 2011, 11:51:23 AM »
£500 has been taken out of my bank last night. It says that it's a paypal transaction to someone I've never heard of for that amount. My paypal has been hacked please help!! How do I reverse the charge with HSBC? Paypal says it will take 10 days to investigate the case. I need to pay my rent tommorow.

I'm so panicked right now. I just finished having the worst panic attack of my life.

If this were me, this is what I would do:

You need to call / go into your bank immediately and inform them of the unauthorised charge. There will likely be forms to fill out. I know with my US bank, they immediately returned the charges when this happened to me, pending the outcome of the investigation (i.e. had the charged proven to be real, they'd take the money back just as swift).

I don't have the same faith in banks here, however you NEED to get in touch with your back super quick!

Then you need to contact your landlord. It would be best if you had something in writing from your bank to back up your claims, should your landlord request it. Alternatively you'll just have to pay the late fees later on, I guess.

Hopefully you have also changed all of your logins, passwords etc...

I had this happen to me a few months back.

HSBC fraud contacted me and said I needed to sort it out with PayPal first. Keep on top of PayPal and it should get sorted well before the 10 days are up. They may try to say they won't refund the charge, but they should if you're pushy.

I think it was a 5-6 day turnaround for me.

Good luck!

ok thanks guys. Basically the bank has credited my account with the money and they have opened a dispute asking the person that the money was paid to to show them what I've purchased/what service I've used.

I've also opened a dispute with paypal.

I'm worried as hell! We're broke enough as it is!!

Hi There,

I was going to suggest contacting your bank directly, but seems that other have here.

This has happened to me in the past as well. It's bothersome to say the least. And PayPal is supposed to be a safe place to transfer and use your money on-line. It's becoming more and more vulnerable each and everyday.

Here's hoping all works out for you. :)

Good news! Paypal took my side in this investigation and I'm getting my refund within 5 days.

Does anyone know what I should say to the bank? They've given me the money in credit (it's on my account now) and I don't want to be double paid by paypal and the bank.

Just tell them the truth. You've been paid the money back. You'll have to pay one of them back because if it was discovered you recovered the £500 twice then you could charged for fraud. Best to do it quickly.

Simple - just tell them that Paypal refunded you the amount and the bank will take their money back.

I had a dodgy transaction through Paypal once and was refunded by both my bank and Paypal when I alerted both.  I told the bank Paypal refunded me and they took their money back.  No problem.

Glad it got all sorted out!!

Ah ok thanks guys. Do you think it's okay if I wait for paypal to send it to my bank and then tell my bank? I Just can't have my account be empty because bills keep on coming out.
