NHS pension

Does anyone know what happens to an NHS pension (final salary type pension) if you move abroad?  Is it kept in a pension pot?  As it's not a standard pension I'm not clear on what happens with years of service (or the fact that the years of service won't continue).  Is it a matter of waiting until age 62 or 65 or whatever to collect it?
