immunization shots for school
« on: December 04, 2011, 05:13:39 PM »
Hi,
We are planning a move to USA for around March and have looked on Baltimore County schools (including preschool) immunizations that children need before they can start school.

Most of them are fine for our 5 year old, the only ones the UK hasn't given her is varicella (chickenpox - although ironically she's just got them this week!) and Hepatitis B. We called the clinic here in UK and there are 3 Hep B shots required. The nurse or doctor said that 1 shot is given now, 1 more shot in a month's time but 3rd shot isn't for 6 months!!
Even if we started the process now it would be June before she got her last. Has anyone run into this problem and know if there's anyway around it? Do they do them any differently in USA, ie closer together? We don't know what to do, it will be a nightmare if she can't attend some sort of preschool until she starts kindergarten in September.

Thanks.
And the world first spoke to me in Sensurround

i know each state has its own rules, but when we moved to nj 3 yrs go, the children could start as long as they had begun the series of shots.

She should be fine as long as she started her series of shots.

It is the same distance apart in the US too. I remember clearly, cause I was a bad mum and we did the first two and forgot about the third. When the school later checked about it- the doctor ended up doing a test to check for the immunity and she had it so was ok (or she would have had to start the series again)- so learn from mistake and keep track :)

They are given the same way in Texas, so this must be some sort of standardized protocol.  I had to go through it between September, 2010, and March, 2011, because my volunteer emergency-response work required it.
