US licences and insurance
« on: December 08, 2011, 09:41:50 PM »
Hi all,
Can anyone answer these queries please?
1) Amy has had 7 years no-claims in the USA, can we get them transferred to the UK? If so, is a letter from the US insurer all that is needed?
2) Does Amy need to do the UK driving test if she's already passed the US test?
3) Anyone know a good (and cheap) insurer of US drivers on the FLR(m) route into the UK?

With thanks for your time
Ant and Amy

1 - Depends on the insurance carrier.  If the carrier she used in the US also operates in the UK (such as Geico), you may have a chance.

2 - Definitely yes

3 - Search the forum for 'car insurance'.

Cheers Geeta,

Thanks for the quick reply :)

Am surprised at 2) Does this mean that Amy will have to take the UK test before any driving here?

Don't be surprised...the US states' driving exams have nothing to do with the UK system.  She can drive for one year following her arrival date on her US license, but she cannot drive after that using her US license.  It is best for her to plan to get her UK license well before that one year is over.

Hi

As per Geeta's responses above :)

For the insurance aspect - it's not possible to 'single' out a cheap insurer as such. There are many many factors and variables and premiums range from acceptable to utterly insane!

Some people do have better quotes than others, even from companies which do take into account US driving history and no claims bonus etc.

Depending on 'which' car you choose, insurance premiums will vary, engine size, brand, model etc, then things with yourself, ages, driving experience, where the car's kept, it's value etc. Higher level things will be the postcode in which you live and where the cars registered, if its a single person on the insurance or a married couple, if the main insurer/driver is male or female..

Cheers, DtM! West London & Slough UK!
