Hey! This is my first ever post on these forums because I saw this topic and it made my day. I live in Glasgow and when I first started my job I asked my (Glaswegian) husband if people at his work also say "bye" 17 times before hanging up in a singsong-y way. Love that other people have noticed this. What is so funny is that I drag out the beginning of the conversation in a typical American way:
"Hi this is Francesca from XYZ, how are you doing today?!"
This leaves many Brits (I speak to people all over the country) utterly flummoxed. They usually respond with a curt "fine" and then move on, never asking me how I'm doing. But then when the conversation's over I'm like, "Ok, thanks, bye!" and they're still in their jazzy little goodbye solo. I usually can still here the last few "Bye, bye, thanks, bye, by-yee!"s going on as the phone leaves my ear.
