Higher education is not free in England though, it is 9,000/yr plus living expenses.  Scotland and Wales are different of course.

And it's only free in Scotland if you're Scottish - students from England/Wales who study in Scotland have to pay the normal fees. Used to be the same in Wales (Welsh students got free higher education, while English/Scottish students in Wales didn't), but I think they have to pay fees now too.

It's not £9000 at every school, is it?  I thought that was the maximum but not every school was going that high.  But maybe I am just naive!

Well, they didn't say you couldn't, so almost every school did.

....which still is cheaper than a university education in the US.

It's about $1k more than the in-state tuition at my state university. So it really depends where you live. It's not like someone from a high-cost in-state state can go to a lower-cost in-state school for the lower cost.

Most schools ended up with very little choice. Nearly all of the teaching funding has been removed, so to make up the gap...they need to charge the £9000 (or near to it). There is also a some issue about being a "cheaper" option that schools are wrestling with.
TBH, the UC system has had tuition skyrocket as well, so it seems to be happening all over.

True it all depends and it all depends on state residency requirements. I'm interested to see how much they'll try to hike international fees. LSE and SOAS are already +13K per year while most smaller schools are about +10K. Very few schools will be able to charge whatever they want, but at this rate, IMO the UK will price themselves out of the international market. They have to compete with the US, Canada, Australia and mainland Europe. I doubt we'll see anymore EU students if they can get an education for free or next to nothing on the continent...

I believe the trend now is to enroll at Danish universities -- cheaper and courses are taught in English.
