help with step-down transformer
« on: January 24, 2012, 08:52:44 PM »
Can anyone advise if this transformer will work with my sewing machine?

Here's a pic of the model/voltage info (sorry -- tinypic is flipping the photo when uploaded, not sure why):

Thanks!

My sewing machine works on the simplest step down. Yours is a 0.6 amp machine, if I read correctly upside down. The transformer is listed as 100VA, so should be be no problem.

If anything this transformer is 'overkill'; I would be aware of the reviewers who said it gets very hot, which is typical for a transformer rated for continuous use. Just don't sit it on something which could ignite/char or leave it plugged it.

Might this one be better?  I think it's less powerful:

this one might be better - just double check the total wattage on the sewing machine

Janome just told me the total wattage of the machine is 900w.  Sounds like a lot, doesn't it?  It's just a home sewing machine with a bit of electronics.

that sounds VERY high wattage - my big cuisinart food processor isn't that much. I would believe 90, but not 900. Sewing machine motors just aren't that big

But if it is 90, then I'd need that first transformer that I linked to, right?  Because the other two are 45 watt?

I make it 72 watts  - amps*power input = watts or (0.6*120=72)

So yes, you would need something rated for 100 watts. this one would do it:

Thanks so much for your help with this.  I clearly have no idea what I'm doing -- I just don't want to ruin my sewing machine!

I emailed Janome back to question their 900 watt response and they've corrected it to be 90 watts!

Super - so my initial thought of 90 was correct, but my calculation of 72 probably didn't consider the light, which also draws power and adds to the total wattage.

Good result!
