Where should we live if working at Gatwick?
« on: January 16, 2012, 02:35:08 AM »
Hi all!
Just found out we will be moving to uk from Houston in a few months for my job. The office is Very close to Gatwick. I have 2 young children and a husband who will work from home. I'm looking for a place that is family friendly, not too rural and less than 30 min commute to work. Thoughts? Currently leaning towards Horsham....what do you think?

Are you planning for the commute to be on public transport or by car?

Hi,

A little bit of an open question!

Please take a look at your realistic income levels and then choose a range of properties that suit. Another aspect would be if your employer is paying for your living expenses? or will it be out of your salary that all is paid for?

There's potentially many possible areas to live around the Gatwick area. Please check the rightmove.co.uk website to begin to narrow your search

Cheers, DtM! West London & Slough UK!

I used to live in Horsham, which was fantastic and had quite a few people working at Gatwick living there. Train to Gatwick is very easy, traffic through Crawley isn't great at rush hour. More than happy to answer any specific questions you have about it.

Other than that in the area, I wouldn't recommend Crawley (I know a couple of people through the Army who claimed they felt safer stationed in Iraq than in Crawley, although that's probably hyperbole - it isn't the nicest place though). Haywards Heath is nice, Burgess Hill apparently has really good schools and seems to be full of young families but otherwise is a bit of a dump. Not sure about East Grinstead and Forest Row. Other than that for what you're after you're looking at getting the train in from Redhill, Brighton or Croydon - all doable, but I don't really know the areas.

Burgess Hill is horrible. I don't even like it when my train stops there!

It's nicer further out. I used to work in a factory right next door to the Porsche dealership!

Thank you all! To answer some of your questions....
Yes, employer will be giving me a housing allowance although I don't have an amount yet.
Have been all over right move and other sites. Areas I have narrowed it down to...horsham, Hayward's Heath ( although, I've been told its snobby and it doesn't appear to have as many amenities as horsham), dorking ( looks to be an offly long commute). Anyone have strong feeling about these? It seems unanimous from what I have read, that we should stay away from red hill, burgess hill, and crawley.
