Seattle to Essex
« on: February 17, 2012, 02:40:31 AM »
Dual Citizen needing a lot of help and advice. I have to relocate for undisclosed time back to Essex  because of family illness, have lived in WA for 22+ years. I have two children 7, 11 and they will be coming with me. Friends have no idea what I need to do about registering them for school or medical. They assume that because we are all DC's we can just walk back into country and get everything!! I've said I don't think it's that easy as we are not UK residents. I need lots of advice on what to do. I am in the midst of booking flight, US hubby will still be working over in US till we figure out what is gonna happen with my Dad (84, heart attacks early dementia, and stubborn). I will be leaving him with settlement visa forms in case he needs to relocate, and all instructions for our two four legged babies (thank goodness that changed and became easier). Can anyone help me with time process of registering kids for school, vaccination translation from US to UK, renting place with no credit history or employment in UK (do have 3-6 months rent that can pay in advance). Getting medical help especially for my kids. What is the application process for beginning school in mid year, plus my son has ADHD so may need help. As I said none of my friends or family can get it...I'm not from there anymore, I'm totally clueless and very very overwhelmed at the moment. Oh one positive note I do have a little ford fiesta waiting for me  :) buying that from the bro, so at least the car thing is sorted out and he can put me on his insurance for just a small addition.
Thanks for answering my q's, plus anyone else living in Essex?

Welcome!  I'm living in Chelmsford, Essex.

Regarding renting, when I came over with no UK credit or employment history, I found agencies wanted me to pre-pay the 6 months of rent on a 6 month rental.  Ended up staying with a friend instead.

For the medical stuff, that was one of the easier things to do, I just went down to the local surgery with my passport and registered.  It should be even easier for you as a dual and much easier than the US medical system with insurance cards and this doctor doesn't accept that insurance, etc.  Then, make appointments and have a chat regarding your son.  A friend's child has ADHD and it seems to be well-managed for in the local school system here.
