American in Bicester
« on: July 30, 2011, 08:45:49 AM »
Hello from Bicester. My husband moved to Banbury in November 2009 when he accepted a position with a UK company located near Bicester.  He relocated to Bicester right before I joined him last November.  We are a middle aged couple with no human children, just the four-legged variety.  We moved here from Atlanta, GA, where we met and lived about 15+ years.  We keep hearing about other Americans in the Bicester area but we are yet to meet any of you.

Nowhere near Bicester (had to look it up on Google maps), but welcome to the forum. We are also old and covered in pets.

Hi and welcome to the UK.

I have been to Bicester many years ago.. nice part of the country.. not far from Oxford and all that holds of interest re history/shops etc...

I hope you find some fellow compatriots in the area and I am sure in time you will.  :)

In the meantime, keep in touch with your new American (and Welsh) online friends here to keep the lines of communication open and your sense of belonging.  Your dogs will help you in making new friends as people who walk dogs generally get to chat at some point on the walks.  Sometimes English people (not representative of all of the UK inhabitants though I hasten to add) are not very chatty to begin with, the old reserved attitude can prove to be prohibitive when making new friends, don't be put off by this.. sometimes it is merely shyness and has nothing to do with them not wanting to chat to you.. be brave and be the first to break the ice! You may just make a new lifelong friend.  :)

We were very fortunate when we moved to Michigan in the 60's as the apartment complex we lived on,  had other ex pats from various parts of the world.. we had English, Japanese, German, Russian, Swiss, Greek/French Canadian, Cherokee as well as many wonderful American friends.. still in touch with two close friends from Elementary School there.

Enjoy the upcoming weather.. its going to be about the best we have had this year!!

Thanks for the replies.  The Bicester outlet mall is a bit too upscale for my budget but it provides some great people watching entertainment.  We have two cats and a dog.  The dog is a rescue who was, unfortunately, not socialized as a puppy.  He's a sweetheart with people but he is horrible with other dogs.  Walking him is a nightmare when you meet another dog.  I try to play fetch with him in the garden but he prefers playing fetch down the hallway inside.  He is a beagle/German shepherd mix with a very interesting personality.

Cheers!

If you're in Bicester - I'm sort of down the road (A4095 toward Witney, but not that far along). :o

Very nice to have a fellow American within 20 miles!!! I already feel less homesick. ;D

Welcome! my boyfriend lives in Banbury and it is most likely I will be moving in with him next year. I've been to Bicester Village once and it didn't seem like much of an outlet to me, everything was still expensive and not that great!

Welcome!  I know of Bicester and Banbury because the vehicle hire company I work for (Northgate) have depots there, and it was my job to include them on our website's map pages :)

I know this was written a few months ago but my husband (whose account this is) and I live in Abingdon (just south of Oxford) and I work in Witney. I'm originally from NY and was getting pretty homesick recently. I would love to meet some Americans in the area.

Hi!  I'm new the site and live not far from you...  Oxford, in fact.  I find the threads a little difficult to follow.  How are you and how are you finding this forum?
