It is easy for someone, such as myself, to focus on the smaller picture because the reality is sometimes too disgusting to face. Thanks for the reminder...
The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

May you find hope in the darkest hours and focus on the brightest days free from bitterness that grows you may not judge the universe.

"There is a difference here. Individual bigotry is bad - either way. It is also darned hard to correct as it is often reinforced at a very young age and becomes part of the individual. The lady you mention was probably brought up in an environment establishing and reinforcing that she was "owed" something. Given that slavery and segregation did exist, it is understandable, even if misplaced.

Institutional discrimination/racism is a different animal. A rude lady expecting favoritism creates hard feelings and harms civility, but she is an individual. Systemic racism affects an entire race of people".

Very true and not just race but age, women, disability, religion etc. etc.

When lecturing a graduate level class on this issue it was amusing to see how defensive most of the white students got when the history, research and statistics were placed before them. Individuals and their hate and stupidity make up larger groups that makeup the entire society. Discrimination is so subtle most of the time and very pervasive. I personally will not tolerate people with majority status trying to tell me my every day experiences are all in my head or even not true at all.

We each can be part of the problem or part of the solution but a person has to care first. Obviously still not a whole lot of genuine caring going on. Talk is cheap.

Meanwhile I wonder how the OP is getting along and how things will turn out for him.

thank you for thinking about me. i'm still functioning----perhaps not at my best, but i'm still waiting for the approval of my visa as my partner has already sent  the necessary docs. it's about 14 days the first initial time my ECO emailed me about sending more docs.
i'm so scared but i'm trying to be as optimistic as ever, to remain some sense of functionality.
hope all is well for you too.
i see you from the sky, and i wonder how long it will take me to get home....i don't want anything more than to see your face when you open the door....

Hopefully one day soon you can use the term 'hubby' in a true legal sense in the UK.
I just hope that more people will ignore the fatalism of the argument that we are beyond repair. We are not beyond repair. We are never beyond repair. - AOC

I agree, I think it is becoming a big deal in the UK to allow us to get married. marriage is marriage it really isn't about being gay or straight it is about commitment and love. religous beliefs cannot/must not affect laws cos it will always discriminate upon one group or another.
