Where can I get a bit of tartan fabric in London?
« on: May 18, 2012, 03:38:23 AM »
I read about a tradition in Scottish weddings where the man pins a square of his family tartan onto the bride during the ceremony (symbolizing that she is now part of his family). I really like this idea and since I'll be in London before the wedding, I'm hoping to find some of "his" tartan fabric. Since there isn't really a JoAnn's or Hobby Lobby around the corner, where would I begin? He has a kilt with his tartan, so I at least have a reference for the shop keeper.

Thanks in advance!

London? No idea.  :-\\\\
But if you can't find anything in London, you could try contacting kiltmakers in Glasgow or Edinburgh.  Just tell them which tartan it is.... you might have to buy a bigger bit of fabric than you actually need, but I'm sure it can all be done by post.

This is probably more expensive than your standard tourist shop, but an option: http://www.albionhighland.com/

I'm sure there are places online where you can easily buy a scarf in the required tartan as well.

If you're only looking for a small square, the stores might be persuaded to give you a swatch for free (or a nominal fee), as that's pretty common with fabric stores.
Summer 97 - first visited friends in London

Feb 02 - moved to London on BUNAC
Sep 02 - WP granted (IT skills shortage list)
Sep 04 - WP renewed
Sep 06 - WP renewed again (screwed by 4-5 year ILR change)
Sep 07 - ILR!
March 09 - Citizenship!
July 09 - bone marrow transplant :(
18 Sep 10 - wedding!
Mar 12 - half marathon in Paris! 1:47:12!
Oct 12 - Amsterdam FULL marathon! 3:48:23!

You should look into online shops, as the Scottish apparel in London is very limited. My mother in law always stocks up on things like kilt socks when she's in Edinburgh. I was going to suggest Albion Highland, as another poster has, as it's the only shop that sells tartan I know of in London. If you were in Edinburgh, you'd have dozens of shops, but you may have to go online if you're in England.

Try tartanonline.com and scotweb.co.uk

Unless your fiance has a very common tartan, the fabric can be very expensive, and you may not be able to only buy a swatch. I looked up my tartan on scotweb, and they sell samples for £3.60, but only sell by the metre (£35-60). No clue how large the sample is, but it might be enough.

Thanks! I will look into those. A sample should be fine since I just need a little square or whatever. Big enough to pin on my dress. :)

If you know what tartan you want, I could nip into the shop where my husband got his kilt and see if they have or could get a sample.

Oh wow, thanks noirem! I'll have to get Stuart to take a photo of his kilt. I will PM you if I can get what it's called (?? I don't know how they classify them! lol) :)

A picture should help. Some of the standard tartans look a little different depending who wove them (larger repeats) but that shouldn't matter for a small square. Does your DF not know which clan it is?  It's usually the clan name and then there can be a traditional (often more browns and greys) and a modern.

Well ditto. I too also live in inverness and my friends mother works in a tartan weavers. I can also probably easily find it and send down a bit of it if the other poster is unable to find any. There is certainly no shortage off tartan stores around  :) And as mentioned all we need is his surname. Clan tartans are directly taken from the clan name/surname

Try any branch of John Lewis. These shops have good fabric departments. Some street markets are also good, the biggest being in Walthamstow.
