look at that.. city of 3million people and only one route to London!  Not that I'm really complaining, because it's BA and I love them.  But still, you see why it's the only way I've ever gone. ;)  I just wish it still flew into Gatwick like it used to.  Thanks Graham :)

I never took that route, we'd fly from Phoenix to Pittsburgh to Manchester with BMI. BA kinda sucks.  ;D

If you think about it, most brits don't know where Arizona or Phoenix are. They think it's somewhere near Texas.  ::)

Yeah... I've heard, "Phoenix, oh.. isn't that in Las Vegas?" more times than I can count.  Well, no.. because for starters, Las Vegas isn't a state  ::)

I love BA, have never had a complaint. :)  Also.. I don't like layovers.  From the time I leave my house until the time I arrive at Sean's, it's been a 20 hour journey straight-through.  No need to add on any extra time :)  Besides which, it's always been cheapest to flight that route.  Adding any stops jacks the price up no matter which airline I've looked at.  Just my own experience.  :-/

One correction - Virgin only flies to Miami from Heathrow.

Thanks, Peedal ... you're right.   Their daily flight has switched back and forth several times, and I expect I did my earlier survey when it was on the move so "caught" both.   I'll get a fresh data feed and regenarate the list if anyone's interested (there are probably other changes) ... if not I'll leave it be as an archive piece.

City of 3 million?  Phoenix isn't anywhere close to 3 million people, more like 1.3 million.

I wish there were some better routes into Houston, but alas, everything's detoured through Philly with US Airways (with whom I will *never* fly again), or London with Continental or BA.  Grrr....I'm not looking forward to planning my first trip back.

Thanks for the list, Graham, it's quite helpful.  Maybe one of the mods could make it a sticky up top?  :)

hey Victoria,, I know what you mean. I only fly on Continental because it is only one of two ( BA is the other)  that does non-stop to Houston.  Most of the time it isn't too bad tho.  One word of advice,, bring a few snacks on the plane trip, as the food on the plane is really bad. REALLY BAD,,lol.

When are you flying back? I know I am flying back at the end of October, for my youngest's birthday. Not sure of the date yet tho. I have been watching for a decent fare.  They are much higher so far this year, than they were in previous years. :/

Hey tebs, isn't it terrible?  :)  I'm flying from Manchester, so I'm forever doomed to do at least one transfer- no non-stop flights for me.  :(  Agreed about the plane food being bad, I always bring my own.  I've lost count of the number of weird looks I've gotten from flight attendants for refusing the meals.  :)

I have no idea when I'm flying back, it'll be next year at the earliest.  Getting married this weekend, and then getting my FLR, so after finding a job, it'll take a bit of savings before I can visit.  Hopefully the rates will drop a bit before I fly over.  :)

North West, via MSP or Detroit ???

[moderator-hat]I did wonder about making the page sticky, but there's a number of other pages that have been suggested in the same way and it would mean that the current news got pushed a long way down.  Better solution expected in not-days-but-perhaps-weeks  ;) [/moderator-hat]

If some of you are looking to fly back to the States in the near future - you may find this useful:

Travelocity (UK site) has a feature where you can designate certain flights and they will notify you via e-mail when the price goes below a level that you set.

For example, I have mine set up for 5 possible routes:

Heathrow to JFK
Heathrow to Newark
Birmingham to Newark
Gatwick to JFK
Gatwick to Newark

I have set it up so any time a flight on any airline goes below £150, I get an e-mail from them.

I set this up back in June, when I was tentatively planning a trip back to the states for the Thansgiving holiday.  Sure enough, I got an e-mail from them in late August advertising a one-day special on American Airlines.  I then went to American's website (since I wanted to pay in dollars) and got two round trip tickets back to the states for about $580 (About £320)!  This was less than half of the going rate at the time.

it's a nice service if you are flexible about your travel dates. You can set up the parameters however you like, but be warned that they often advertise a price that is lower than what is really available.  I don't get very much "junk" e-mail from them, and I never buy direct from the site; I always prefer to go directly to the airline's site.

On another note, I have flown to and from the UK and Europe on Lufthansa, Virgin, BA, American, and Continental, and American has been the best for me.  I'm not a small guy, so to me, comfort when flying is #1, and the seats on American had the most leg room by far.
