what's at the URL:

(I am ringing up a customer’s order at a very busy store.)

Customer: “Those jeans are coming up as £79.99 when they should be £39.99.”

Me: “Okay, in that case, I will just change them for you. It’s the first day of our sale and it sometimes takes our computers a while to adjust all the prices.”

Customer: “You should apologize to me. In my country, we would apologize for a mistake like that.”

Me: “Well, as I said, it is not really an error on my part, just a computer issue. But as you can see, I have changed the price for you.”

Customer: “I know it’s not your fault but you should say sorry to me. Where I come from, we would apologize for that sort of thing!” *grumbling under breath* “Stupid b****.”

Me: “What was that? I don’t quite think I caught that last part.”

Customer: “Oh, nothing! Just talking to myself! And I still think you should apologize. This is ridiculous!” *swears more under her breath*

Me: “Here’s your order! I am glad we avoided an international incident today. Have a fantastic day!”

We almost had an international incident at my work yesterday and the customer was British, I was the American one (on the till).

A bunch of vintage sewing patterns were donated, they are all from the 60s and 70s.  I put 99p on them all, but really should have made them £1.99.  A woman came to the counter with one and said, "You do realize these were only 40p originally."  She did not seem in any way light-hearted or joking about it.  Of course I realized, I was the one that priced them up and left the original vintage price tag on them because it looked cool, and well, vintage.

"Yes, I do realize that, and it only costs a pound now which in light of the fact that the original price was at least from 40 years ago, I think it's a fair deal."

She was not amused.  Naughty me thought she had already left, and so I turned to my volunteer and said, "*Lots* of things only cost 40p in 1972!"  The lady heard me and said sourly, "It was a joke."

I still don't think it was.

According to the first UK inflation calculator that came up when I googled, 40p in 1972 is equivalent to £3.70 in 2011 money. So, £99 is a fair price, even very low if the patterns are unused or in good condition. Vintage patterns often get a premium, I think, on ebay.

Thanks for that!  :) Vintage definitely commands a premium!
