Tell me about it and don't even look at all the paperwork you have to provide etc just a load more red tape, no wonder there is a 3 month wait for an appointment!

Well I think its a total crock! Its like we dont have a choice in the nationality of our children. Is the US turning into some sort of police state? Before you know it the US gov't will want us all micro chipped like animals!  ;D

You probably already are - it's in that stuff they spray inside the planes when you leave the country!

I cannot belive this!  This really makes me sick  [smiley=puke.gif].  They are FORCING your nationality on your kids!  There are more and more things about this country that just make me ill and angry!  There is no reason for this!  I just can't even say anymore, I'm totally speechless.  >:(

I learned that it has always been required to enter the US on a US passport if you have a claim to citizenship only that recently they are enforcing it more.   I am reluctant to travel to the US in the circumstance I do get an immigration officer that is strictly by the book.  This is the post that on the newsgroup that alerted it to me.

If they're convinced that the person at the port of entry is a US citizen,
then they would most likely admit that person.  In theory, there is an
administrative penalty for a US citizen entering the US without having
sufficient proof of citizenship (a valid passport, or other documentation
when authorized), although currently the penalty is set at zero dollars.

In the case of a child born outside the US with US parentage, if a foreign
passport were presented for the child, the immigration officer would
most likely also advise them to verify that the child is or is not a US
citizen via a US consulate or the State Department.

An adult would get a more severe lecture on how the US requires
all US citizens to have US passports when they enter the country,
and not foreign passports (if they suspected that he was a US citizen),
even if they're allowed to use that foreign passport when outside the
US.

All the circumstance involved would take a part in the reaction of immigration.

I don't like that I have to schedule seperate appointments for my 2 children and have to take both of them and my husband to the embassy in London.  Not only does it take 3 months to get an appointment but finding 2 appointments together or close to each other makes it more difficult.  The only consolation is that I live close enough to London  that it won't involve hours of travel.
I am going to email the embassy and see if they can help.  I thought it would be presumptious of me to use the email when they specifically state on the website that they are only contactable through post.
Thanks for all your replies

Pebbs,

I got the sickly smiley when I clicked on more smileys, and the sick one is at the lower left hand corner.  This site has the most smileys I've ever seen and I love it!

Anyway...back to our regularly scheduled programme  ;)

Please let us know anything you find out. I am in your exact situation. I have to register two births.
You can call the embassy but its expensive. I paid 60p a minute for the switchboard and £1.30 a minute to speak to someone in the American citizens advice office. I got more joy from email.
Good luck

i'm quite sure that USG doesn't mean to force nationality on anyone. if you don't ever intend for your children to make use of their claim to US citizenship, you should ask the embassy if you can renounce it. i am sure if the british spouse travels with his children on UK passports then no questions will be asked; as long as all immigration issues for UK nationals travelling to US are addressed.

US immigration has, in the past, been lax about enforcing the law  requiring use of US passport if you have one. obvious security issues have changed this. i believe that  part of the impetus for stricter controls on childrens passport come from custody and kidnapping issues.

I have my reply from the embassy.  They certainly are quick at replying to emails.
They can do nothing unless I have real travel dates and they only reschedule appointments when they are after your travel dates.  My course of action is to schedule appointments for when I am planning on being in the US since I am waiting for the tickets to go down £30-£40 total before I buy them and then see about getting my appointments rescheduled.
I do hope that the process is still as fast as it was for Marlespo.

I am beginning to believe my friend's husband in what is a conspiracy to have taxpayers who might never live in the land of the free.  That is why he doesn't want his daughter to get her US passport.

It really was as easy as pie once we got there, promise. I'm sorry this is such a fuss for you - - - it is completely annoying, I agree.  :-\\\\
I'm done moving. Unrepatriated back to the UK, here for good!

I received an emergency appointment to get passports.  It is for exactly one week before we leave but the embassy assured me that we would have the passports before we went or they would give us temporary ones.

I will update later as to what transpires.
