US Expat Tax Return Deadlines
« on: April 04, 2012, 05:35:23 PM »
This is another tax season and we would like to remind American expats about upcoming deadlines.

As an American expat residing abroad, you get an automatic extension until June 15, 2012 to file US income tax return. However, any tax that is due for 2011 must be paid in full by Apr 17, 2012 to avoid any interest.

Many of you heard about FBAR. The form TD F90-22.1 is due by June 30, 2012. This form is filed separately from your tax return. No extension is allowed for this form. FBAR must be filed if the aggregate value of financial accounts exceeds $10,000 at any time during the calendar year.

Great comments.

The FBAR for the US tax year of 2011 is due to arrive with the US Treasury by 30 June 2012. It must arrive there by that date - not simply be postmarked by that date.

The last day of the tax year over here is tomorrow. This is the last day for several important tax deadlines such as investing in an ISA, taking capital gains or losses or investing in a pension.
