Microwave popcorn
« on: March 18, 2012, 01:40:29 AM »
My mother sent me a box of Movie Theater Butter popcorn (Pop Secret) in the mail and I'm down to my last bag!  Where can I get it here?  Or, if not the same kind, some decent type of microwave popcorn?  Orville Redenbacher popcorn would be amazing, too, or Newman's Own.

I don't mind trying some UK brands but the only one I can find here is Butterkist and it's absolutely terrible.  I've bought it a few times when I've been desperate and I always regret it.  I don't understand why they have one flavour called 'butter' and another called 'salt'...  Surely the perfect popcorn tastes of both butter and salt ???

I realise now this is one of those things that I got really used to eating in the US and is probably pretty uncommon outside the US.  But it's too late - I miss it!

I'm not a microwave popcorn afficionado, but my local Blockbuster sells their version of microwave popcorn, and it's not half bad.  I don't know if it's better/worse than Butterkist, but maybe worth a try if you are willing to have a go?

Costco has Orville Redenbacher. :) They sell it in bulk though, so I've never actually bought it! Personally, I prefer salted popcorn to the buttered stuff, and think the Butterkist stuff is good. Just ate a whole bag of it by myself yesterday! ;) But I do still like buttered, and get a craving every now and then...

Yeah I was just gonna say I saw the Orville Reddenbacher at Costco too.  I can't remember what flavor it was but you got I would guess like 30 bags.  We don't eat much popcorn but when we do I just make it in a kettle.  It's not very hard at all and it doesn't seem to get stale as fast (for me at least)

Why wouldn't they have a butter and salt flavour? The perfect popcorn for you is not necessarily the perfect for someone else. I don't like butter on my popcorn, I just like it salty. The butter version is salty as well as buttery, or if it's not salty "enough", it's pretty easy to add salt to something...

The brand I see most often in shops is "Popz" I don't know if that is worth trying, they have a butter flavour, also Ocado sells Jollytime which is an American brand, but I think they only sell a plain flavour.

Personally I just make it in a pan from the kernels, it takes like 2 minutes, you can make it with spray oil to reduce calories :) If you really wanted to, you could melt butter and pour it over, you can also buy those flavour shaker things on amazon.

DW likes the low fat variety can get in the US....we usually bring a couple of boxes back with us and get others to bring as well.

+1 - my local health food shop sells a 1kg bag of popcorn kernels for a mere £1.25, which should last me many months. And it's really not hard to make.

:o I did not need to know this!  :P

I love making popcorn on the hob! I actually feel like teaching Mr MLG how to do it has helped him on his way to becoming a North American in training. I like the fact that making it in the pan means you have more control over what goes in it and how much to make.

Where can you get brown paper bags? I've never noticed them at the grocery stores in the UK. Last time I was in Sheffield, I used a plastic bag...not one of my finer moments  ::)

The next time I ended up just putting it in a bowl and shaking it that way. But let me tell ya, nothing beats brown bag popcorn!  :D

You may have to resort to the internet, but sometimes craft stores have them, oddly.

They also sell those microwave poppers.  You might need to have someone pick one up for you in the US and ship it or buy one when you visit, but they work.  My parents had one for years.  They also sell hot-air ones.

I'm with the others on stove-top popcorn.  Easy peasy.

Little warning, if you order popcorn from British cinemas, you will be given the choice between salty or sweet.  Salty does not have butter and, in my experience, sweet is sugar tossed onto dry popcorn.  Different strokes and all that, but I don't care for either.

How about getting one of these? I had one in the US and loved it! :)

THIS.
You can get popcorn kernels in most supermarkets. My local Sainsburys carries it in the beans section.

I had my mother send me brown sandwich bags to put kernels in and then pop in the microwave. Then heat up butter/salt/desired topping to be added after. Healthier than the bag stuff and cheaper as well. Depending on the microwave is depending how long you cook it for. Ours is 800W and its about 1 minute 40 before kernels start over cooking
