Best burger in London?

Gradually becoming vegetarian in line with my family....but I am going to be in the City and figure why not just go for it....

Any suggestions?

The best burger in London is maybe at Meat Liquor, if it's overcooked, send it back! I've never had a problem with them overcooking a burger though, but I do go drunk as a skunk on a Friday night a lot though, I've been in there dancing on a table at 1:30am and still managed to get a pink burger The queue is a problem, you have to time your arrival, after 8pm, is normally good, we walked in at 10pm on Friday night with no queue yesterday. I really like their deep fried pickles.

Burgers at ML are the same price as at Byron, a dead hippy is £7.50 at ML, and a Byron cheese burger is 7.75 so I wouldn't say they were overpriced in terms of just how much burgers in London cost I think Byron do a really good burger though, it sort of depends on your style of burger So...if you like thick burgers then people tend to prefer the GBK style burger, which isn't my favourite, I like thin pattys, so I like the byron/ML style much more.

I bang on about kimchi cult a lot, they do a good burger of the eat.st burgers, but there are so many nicer things to eat at eat.st that I don't normally bother so catch them elsewhere.    I do also rate http://www.kua-aina.co.uk/ you can walk in, get a table, get a cheap burger, which is medium and good quality just off carnaby street. I wasn't like ZOMG AMAZING, but I thought was very good, the poppy seed brioche bun is a nice touch.

In terms of Fancy burgers, i.e the ones that will cost you more, be quite thick but delicious, then I totally am in love with -

1. The Hawksmoor burger. It's on the bar menu, so you'll need to reserve a place at the bar at seven dials, guildhall or spittalfields (which has a whole bar menu of awesome, including shortrib fritters and a shortrib french dip sandwhich which will BLOW YOUR MIND) www.thehawksmoor.co.uk You can also get a Big Apple Hot Dog, which is very nice if you like giant hotdogs (I DO!)

2. Opera tavern burger. NOM http://www.operatavern.co.uk/ Opera tavern is a major pick for me at the moment, it's one of the best places to eat in London right now.

P.S There is also a "Secret" burger menu at Joe allen. It's a pretty decent burger, but the pretentious & pointless subterfuge is off putting

There's a new bar here in Glasgow who say they specialise in 'beer and burgers'.  They were talking about their great beefburger recipe on Facebook the other day and I pointed out that a great burger doesn't need a 'recipe'... it's just meat and seasoning, and I won't eat a burger that's got anything else in it, so we've been having a light-hearted FB debate about that.

Beef mince with a decent amount of fat in it, garlic salt and black pepper.  Cooked till just barely pink inside.  That's how I do it!

The toppings are another matter, though...

Definitely agree on Hache and Byron -- really, consistently good.  Not a fan of the GBK burgers at all.  Goodman is fantastic all around (went this weekend, no burger for me, though) and have also heard other rave reviews of Hawksmoor.

Sadly, our outings are currently confined to places with stroller room and high chairs.

Yes a good burger should just be beef and seasoning but what meat that is is really important! So a recipe in this context can mean their different meat ratio maybe? If they're doing it right they're buying meat and grinding it themselves to their own ratio.
Both Meat Liquor and lucky chip closely guard their ratio and breed of meat in their burgers as it affects their flavour greatly, ML has quite a high umami level but nowhere near as high as the Hawksmoor who add bone marrow to their burger for extra meaty fattiness and flavour and their ground beef is a mix of rib eye that they grind themselves, they do a 30% fat to 70% beef ratio.

Ophinky, have you been to the Hawksmoor? I like the HM better, but several people rate GM' more, I had a really good steak there, but I think I just prefer grass fed beef. It would be good to hear another opinion as my boy's is just "Yum steak!" (philistine!)

I tried out Meat Liquor last night and was pretty impressed. I used to get my fill on proper burgers from a fantastic place in Chiswick (can't remember the name now), which also served the best authentic ice cream milk shakes. It was affordable and easy to get a table, but sadly it closed down a few years ago.
I've been a bit hesitant about Meat Liquor as the idea of queuing around the block as if I'm waiting in line for the newest nightclub was not appealing. Luckily, the queue was short when we arrived around 6:30 and our group was quickly ushered into the bar area. The cocktail list is fairly extensive and creative, and since only patrons who have made it through the line are sent to the bar it's quick to get a drink.
The menu is short and sweet. The chipotle wings for starters were perfect, fries and onion rings for sides, however I was not impressed with the "green chili cheeseburger". There was a blurb which stated something a "green chili sauce", and had me imagining something along the lines of a Mexican style salsa verde, (which is probably be based my own ignorance coming from Texas rather than the Southwest) and instead found it was the normal burger smothered in roughly chopped green chili which only added an overpowering bitterness to an otherwise perfect burger. The husband was kind enough to trade his bacon cheeseburger for mine (he's a real gentleman), so all was not lost.
They also have some true American classics like pecan pie, keylime pie, and rootbeer/coke floats for dessert, though I was truly stuffed and couldn't manage another bite so can't vouch for the authenticities.

Not including drinks, it was around £30 for three people which I think is pretty cheap for eating something special in central London.
