Tips for getting the kids adjusted?
« on: May 29, 2012, 03:58:46 PM »
Well we are nearly ready to go, just a few weeks now.  Can anyone share their experiences with moving over with their children?  How was it for them, how long did it take them to get settled, were they ok with accents, etc.

My kids love grandma and grandpa, so it will be great to have them around to help them settle in.  They will be starting school in Sept, we wanted to give them a few weeks to get situated before school starts.

To be honest, it will probably be easier for the kids than it will be for my husband and I, he has lived in the states for 13 years now, and I have lived here my whole life of course.   :)

My 2 (were 20 months and 3 yo when we moved) seemed to hardly notice.  DD has been in nursery since Nov and has adjusted well.  She's picked up a little accent and is using "british" words which she has picked up from school.  He teachers said she is mixing well with the other kids and there seems to be no problems.  DS didn't notice at all.  It took them a couple days to adjust to the time and a couple times asked for things like sesame street or something to eat that we don't have here anymore but otherwise no problems.  We did try and bring them some comforts of home and have them talk on Skype to the family almost everyday too.

Yes that is what we think, there will be little things that the kids will miss but I think they are so young (4) that it will not be too difficult for them.  I was thinking about the food, forgot that the tv shows will probably be different too.  We do a lot of internet tv so we will probably be able to find things online for them to watch if they want.  (Ps ignore my question in other post, I see that you had your kids in states before you moved!)

Yeah both kids were moving from the US.  Foodwise we brought a few things along for the first few weeks till we them used to other stuff.  I think we brought things like goldfish (the big tub), cheezits, pudding mix, and some applesauce.  I also knew what I was going to find at the grocery store already from being here before and because DH arrived before us did an online shop and had it delivered before we arrived so made sure to order some extra goodies in there.
