Don't feel bad -- I used to have trouble understanding my own daughter on the phone  :-\\\\

Been with my BF 3.5 years and I still can't understand him on the phone!
Co-workers with strong Weegie, Aberdonian, Hebredian, Fife accents- get 'em on the phone and I'm like  ??? ???

I think I get through life lip-reading!

Strangely enough, although I have a solidly American accent, now when I go back to the US, I have a hard time readjusting at first to the accents over there...

I say - hold on a sec while I screw my American ears back on!  :D
I know whatchya mean! When I get on the phone with my American suppliers I really struggle again!  I had trouble with my friend when she was visiting.  (My sister was OK, she sounds like me, lol)
I've never gotten food on my underpants!
Work permit (2007) to British Citizen (2014)
You're stuck with me!

When I lived in a non-English speaking country, I thought the problems understanding English speakers after living there a while had to do with learning a second language.  I now think it has to do with rhythms more than anything.

It's funny though, now when I hear American accents, they often sound fake.  My sister who lives in my hometown sounds like she's putting on a New York accent.  My sister from Maine sounds like she's pretending to be an extra on a Stephen King film with all the downeast in it.  And General American sometimes sounds like nails down a chalkboard (I never hear non-tourist Americans using it here, so none of you probably have it that strongly).  The recorded voices over the tannoy in JFK make me blush.  It's like a cross between General American and a southern belle.
