Pregnant and confused :(
« on: May 13, 2012, 11:46:22 PM »
Hiya Everyone!

I stumbled across this forum and was looking for some advice relevant to my situation.

My boyfriend who is an American citizen has just left the UK after being here on a six month visitor visa and I just found out I am pregnant. I'm 25 years old and grew up in care so I have no contact with any of my family.

I'm extremely scared of being alone throughout my pregnancy and I'm not sure what to do.  I assumed that my boyfriend would have the right to come here because he has a baby on the way but I'm not at all sure on this.

Can anyone help me? I can't do this alone.

 ??? ??? ???

Your boyfriend does not have the right to live in the country simply because you have a child together. Your easiest path is to get married and then he can apply for a spousal visa to join you in the UK. Good luck!

Is that the only way?  Because I am still married.  My husband (who is American also) walked out on me 5 years ago and I have no idea where he is or how to contact him.

Does your boyfriend have any particular job skills?  Does he have a European grandparent (particularly Irish or Italian)?

After being apart for five years, is there no way you can get divorced from your husband now?

He's a wildland firefighter.... So I don't know how that would work in the UK....

:(

He to his knowledge has no Irish or Italian heritage..

Geeta - I'm not sure how to go about this.  We were married in America and I never registered it here so my country has no idea of my status....

You don't need to register the marriage in the UK for it to be a valid marriage. I would try to speak to a lawyer about your options for divorce if that is something you would want to pursue. Unless your boyfriend wants to study in the UK (expensive) or has a lot of money, it will be difficult for him to move there other than marriage.

Well, if your boyfriend can't get permission to live here on his own (and it sounds like he can't) then you don't really have a choice except to get married if you want him to live with you.  I'd suggest getting a good divorce attorney and sorting that out ASAP.

I'm a wildland firefighter.

He won't get work here as that.  All fires that are on "wildland" here are fought by regular structure fighters.  With flaps.  It is depressing.

Surely after five years it is abandonment?  Go to Citizens Advice, they should be able to help.

After the baby is born, there might be a chance of him getting the "Single Parent Visa" designed to allow him access to his child resident in the UK. It really would be simpler to just get married to your bf.

If he is more a forester and less a seasonal then he could probably take some NVQ courses and get a job as a tree surgeon or something similar.

All my work was in designated Federal Wilderness areas and those just don't exist here.
