Dental Nightmare

I visited a nhs dentist approx. 6 months ago and was not impressed at all.
He did not clean all of my teeth (approx. only 5 teeth), various teeth started hurting within a few weeks of his prescribing a mouthwash, and at least one tooth is now sensitive – I make a point of not chewing on the side the tooth is located on as it may possibly have a cavity.
As he took dental x-rays, I believe he should have foreseen the issue with the tooth, especially as this particular tooth acted up within a week of my visit.
(Furthermore, my husband and a neighbour have lost multiple fillings on one tooth and use the same dentist.)
I received a notice yesterday that it is time for my checkup, but I truly do not want to see this dentist again.
If I cancel returning to this dentist, will I loose the dental insurance?
Is there a time limit of finding another dentist in order to stay within the program?

Find another dentist! You won't lose entitlement to NHS dentistry because you aren't going to follow up with the first one you went to. Nor will you lose entitlement because you took time to switch. You may have issues if you constantly miss scheduled appointments, but that's a different issue.

Find an NHS dentist you like, the amount of dentists vary by area but it is worth finding one you like and trust.

I agree, just find another dentist. Ask around for a recommendation and find another one!

You and I must have the same NHS dentist! Because I only got 4 of my teeth cleaned on my first visit as well. Then a few weeks later, one of my old fillings started to feel like it was about to fall out, so I made an appt for him to take a look. He patched it up and within a week the filling came completely off. Needless to say, I now have a new dentist. So just to confirm, you don't have to go back to the same dentist.

Your insurance is entirely portable. You don't say where you live but I would suggest that if you live near a teaching hospital with either a dental school or a maxillo-facial department, you ask there about their own services and about ex-students. If you're in London, try Charing Cross Hospital or the Eastman Dental Hospital. Sheffield has an excellent dental school. The British Dental Association can advise you. I would also suggest that you complain about your dentist to the local Primary Care Trust.
