FBAR Help :(
« on: June 14, 2012, 10:31:06 PM »
Hi

My husband needs to file the FBAR for the first time this year as our mutual savings have crept up over the threshold.

Do we file

1040
2555-EZ
1040 Schedule B
and the FBAR?

Anything else?

We don't have anything else that needs to be declared in terms of income and assets etc but we're getting really bamboozled over which forms we need to fill out and where the interest goes?  The interest has been piddling, like 20 quid or something but do we have to declare this and where?

Any help would be much appreciated.   :)

Also, i'm assuming it's ok to still send tax returns to the US Embassy in London?  Do we need to mark the envelope with anything specific?

You need to check that.  The Embassy stopped accepting tax returns for a while and I have not heard if they started up again or not.  I am not aware of anyone who has used the Embassy in this manner for some time.

Bleh.  I was hoping they did since when we sent it to Austin last year it cost over 8 pound registered mail and they still managed to lose it.

The FBAR goes to an entirely different address in Detroit. It is NOT filed with your return. this is lifted from the instructions (color change is my emphasis):

When and Where to File. The FBAR is an annual report and must be
received by the Department of the Treasury on or before June 30th of
the year following the calendar year being reported. Do Not file with
federal income tax return.

File by mailing to:
Department of the Treasury
Post Office Box 32621
Detroit, MI 48232-0621
If an express delivery service is used, file by mailing to:
IRS Enterprise Computing Center
ATTN: CTR Operations Mailroom, 4th Floor
985 Michigan Avenue
Detroit, MI 48226
The FBAR may be hand delivered to any local office of the Internal
Revenue Service for forwarding to the Department of the Treasury,
Detroit, MI. The FBAR may also be delivered to the Internal Revenue
Service's tax attaches located in United States embassies and
consulates for forwarding to the Department of the Treasury, Detroit, MI.
The FBAR is not considered filed until it is received by the Department
of the Treasury in Detroit, MI

I understand the FBAR goes to Detroit but we're filing that online, I was wondering if the actual tax returns can still be sent to London like we used to be able to do.
