Window ventilators/screens
« on: May 27, 2012, 01:40:02 PM »
Sorry, I didn't know where else to put this. :)

My husband has an aversion to opening the windows because of his *intense* fear of spiders.  So much so that at only 75 degrees, we have the air conditioning on.  ::)

Our windows have no screens. I had never heard of this before.  A friend in the States suggested window ventilators. I remember as a little girl, that my great-grandmother had these things in her window. They were a piece of mesh incased in a wooden frame. You could slide the frame to make it bigger or smaller to fit your window. She used to put them in her window (even though she had screens) so that air could come in even when it was raining hard, and rain wouldn't come through.

I tried Googling "window ventilators" and only came up with "window vents" (the small strip that fits at the very top of a window.

Does anyone know to what I am referring, or can suggest another option?

Thank you!

Well, she was an American girl, raised on promises.
She couldn't help thinking that there was a little more to life, somewhere else.
After all it was a great big world, with lots of places to run to.
And if she had to die trying she had one little promise she was gonna keep.

Along with the difficulty in finding flannel bedsheets, this is a product that I can't figure out why isn't more common in the UK. A bit pricey, but if it calms the partner, then worth it ;)

Try these:

http://www.safetyscreens.co.uk/

http://www.ukflyscreens.co.uk/

slightly more DIy (but then without magnets, makes it less easy to take off)

Not crazy about spiders myself! And the amount of flies coming into the house is driving me INSANE!!! BUT, I will keep the windows open as I hate the heat even more. I know exactly of what you're talking about as my mom and dad in the states have several of them. I can't think that I've ever seen anything similar here...and they wouldn't work with my windows here as ours open out rather than like the sash windows we had in the US.You can definitely find screening here in the UK as pointed out above. I'm really hoping that we don't get hot enough to need AC where we are. That is one of the things I am VERY happy about. I HATE the heat, and can't imagine it getting as hot here as it did last year in the States.

Because we don't have that many insects so, unless you're a person with a severe phobia, they're aren't really necessary.

But on hot nights, the moths come in through the open windows like crazy, and in Scotland - midges!

I have had bedroom, bathroom and lounge windows open constantly... day and night...in Scotland!... for the last 4 days and haven't seen a single insect in the flat.   I'm on the 2nd floor... maybe that makes a difference (do they fly that high?).

I think it's entirely dependent on the local situation. In west London I get various buzzy things that look like big flies and the occasional buzzy thing that looks bee-like. But I can't say if it's worse than the US because I was never without screens there. <shrug>

Last summer, I was going to order from here: http://www.portascreen.co.uk/ but they didn't have stock in the size I needed.  I ended up lugging ones like it back from the US, purchased from here: http://www.qualitywindowscreen.com/adjustable-window-screens.html

We are in an old building and have giant sash windows.

We're in London and definitely get the big, black buzzy things.  Also, moths.  Mainly, though, we have a cat who loves to sleep on the window sill and she is a strictly indoor cat, but because we are ground level, it might be tempting to jump out without a barrier.  Or, worse, fall out.

When I was living out near Biggar, we got midges and flies and all sorts in our house when the windows were open. They would collect on the ceiling in the kitchen. Of course, we were way out in the country so there were loads of bugs everywhere. The problem was that we had windows that opened outwards rather than inwards, so we couldn't stick a screen on them even if we wanted to. Would have loved to have some sash windows in that house. When I was in Glasgow in a flat on the 3rd floor, I never had a problem.

LOL...tell that to my kitten who spent his day yesterday chasing the dozen or so flies that came into the house. It was actually quite amusing.

Hey thank you everyone. I will be checking out all your recommendations.

Even though we bought this house new, to me, it is missing some of those "extras" that we are accustomed to in the US, so we are plotting and planning on what to attack first.  The screens are definitely in the top 3, as I said I can't get a good breeze going in here because of DH's spider phobia.

Thanks for all the links and suggestions. :)
