Gifts from the US & Question about Amazon.com
« on: May 31, 2012, 07:02:18 PM »
My family has always lived apart so when they want to give a gift they usually send money. But with my kids already in the UK we've seen this is going to be a problem. My DD just received a US check from my Dad for her birthday. My mum hasn't sent a gift yet because she had hoped to send her an electronic Toys R Us gift card but the UK site wouldn't let her. What are all of you doing in this situation? My DH is thinking a PayPal money transfer might work. As it stands now I had to bring my dad's US check back to the states with me & deposit it into her US savings account (we're still haven't decided what to do w/ their US accounts).

That also leads me to my next Q about Amazon.com. Another gift idea was for an Amazon.com gift card - but apparently those funds won't transfer to the UK site. And I'm pretty established on the US site (Kindle books). How does that transfer? I don't want to lose money I have in my account or my books. Do you just keep your US Amazon account & create a second UK account too? Anyone else run into this?

Thanks,
Shelly

I have on Amazon account that I can sign into from either the US site or UK site. My mom buys my kids UK gift cards on the UK website, using her American account and American credit card. I too can buy my mom US gift cards, using the US website, with my US/UK account and UK debit card.

It's very versatile! Hope this helps!

On the money transfer question, Paypal works really well. I've made use of it in transfers of gift cash in both directions (to and from the States) for several years.
