Rejected e-file (need address)
« on: June 11, 2012, 09:53:51 PM »
I tried to e-file my return via Turbo Tax and received the following message: Your "Transmission Didn't Go Through
We could not e-file your return for the following reason:

Duplicate Social Security Number: A tax return with the same Social Security number has already been submitted - in other words, it appears you're trying to e-file the same return twice. If you need to change this return, you'll need to file an amended return on paper, by mail."

Anyone ever get this before?  Seems a bit odd as I have not submitted anything for this year.  Anyway I'm now in a bit of a panic as I'm travelling out of town tomorrow and looking for the address to send off my paperwork.  Does anyone know the address I send this to??    :o

I would be concerned. There's an epidemic of scammers who file false tax returns using the credentials of real people with SSIDs. They claim a refund to be sent to a prepaid debit card. It seems the IRS don't examine the returns they receive very carefully and simply issue a refund. I'd call the IRS.

+1

The IRS page that explains the possibility of this situation, and what to do in response if you are concerned.

Yikes! I hope you get this sorted out!

Just as an fyi, you can't e-file with a UK address, so it wasn't going to work anyway. I always did my taxes using Turbo Tax, but I had to mail in the forms.

I agree with the OAP - the possibility of an identity theft is very real, and the sooner you jump on this the better.

Good luck.

Another possibility is that it's not fraud, but a mistake like someone else with a similar SSN transposing digits of their number or entering the wrong digit by mistake on their return (someone I know had that happen to him a few years ago and prevented him from e-filing that year).
