science diet feline different here than US
« on: May 30, 2012, 08:57:59 AM »
My cat has been on science diet in the US 8 years, and since we've moved here (he's been here about 3 months) we have transitioned him to science diet bought in the UK.  I know the formulas are different, and I've noticed his coat isn't as shiny/soft.  Anyone notice this?  I'm wondering if I should change his cat food.

Thanks,
Aline

Our cats were on hills prescription food in the US and then here, and it was definitely different.  We were lucky that the liked it here and responded well, but if they hadn't, then we would have switched to something else.

My cat wasn't on Hills Prescription Diet in the US, but he is here and he loves it. He's on the weight loss one and has done remarkably well (he won the UK Pet Slimmer of the Year award in 2007!).

Are there any other factors that might be affecting your cat's coat? Climate, aging, indoor/outdoor lifestyle, etc.?

How old is your cat? We're about to transition ours to the Hill's one with extra fish oil because he's getting a bit arthritic these days. I imagine that will add some shine as well! Bonus! :)

Thanks for the responses.  I don't think changes here account for it, as besides moving, he is still virtually the same age, indoors, drinking plenty, active, etc.

Maybe I'll try something else....

Thanks!

We had BIG problems with Hills Science plan here - we were feeding it to our lovely long hair cat a few years ago and we couldn't figure out why he was losing his fur in clumps and was too skinny and generally not himself. We finally took him to the vet, who promptly changed his food to bog-standard Whiskas/Felix sachets, and he was like a new cat - everything grew back and he was beautiful and glossy again.

So while this may be anecdotal, I'd never, ever, feed another pet of ours anything Hills. It was essentially malnourishing our poor kitty while he was eating tons of it. :(

Hills Science and Hills Prescription are not exactly the same.

Also, cheaper brands like Whiskas generally have corn as the first ingredient listed on the bag. That's not good. You always want to feed your pets food with protein listed first.

It could be that Hills just didn't agree with your cat. I'm sorry he had to go through that, but it doesn't change the fact that Hills Prescription Plan foods are FAR HIGHER in nutrients than Whiskas-type foods.
