Hiya!
« on: April 29, 2003, 01:12:55 AM »
:D Hiya!
I realize that I probably should have done this *before* posting some messages, but I suppose better late than never?  I'm a fairly recent transplant to the UK- I moved to the London area from New York State in Dec 2001 after getting a much sought after work permit to be with my boyfriend of over 3 years and... it looks like I'm staying permanently! He's made me VERY happy and asked me to marry him!!!
I'm really happy to have found this site (much by accident while looking at websites on immigration law once we decided to get married!) because no matter how thrilled I was to be here all those months ago, it was a difficult transition and there are still times when I'm homesick for familiar things and those I love back home.  It's great to know I'm not alone in this- even better still to read that all of you who've been here for YEARS still have homesickness occasionally. I'll have to remember to cut myself some slack hehe
Anyway- thanks for providing for some very insightful, helpful and funny reading  ;D I can see that this site will come in VERY handy!
    Thanks Again!

This site has helped me tremendously...and certainly speeded up my feeling that this is now home. It's great to catch up with people 'just like me'...gives me a sanity that sometimes I need in the the middle of all this daily stuff that Brits take for granted.

Last night my husband and I were coming back from the grocery store and I saw this sign leading into a housing estate.

Traffic Calming Measures Ahead

It occurred to me that a typical tourist wouldn't have a single clue as to what that meant, to the point of having a really hard think about it. I'm envisioning rioting ahead, actually.
Married to Graham, we run our own open-source computer training company in beautiful Wiltshire out of our 1814 Georgian Regency home (a former lodging house and once featured in Antiques Roadshow)

Hiya!  :D  Gratz on your upcoming marriage, and welcome to the site!  :)

So which part of the UK did you transplant to?

duh....ok, so where in the southeast of London are ya?  Are you actually in town, or you like me and *technically* part of London (well Feltham is lol) but really just on the outskirts?

hehe
