See if you can go directly private. Look up ENT specialists or otolaryngologists as some of them prefer now. Make it very clear that your GP office is being useless as many of them only work with referrals.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

You can pay to go private for the first appointment then ask to be treated as an nhs patient from there I was told it costs about £100 but that could be different now who knows, you could also go to a&e and ask to be seen there if you say you have gone deaf and can't hear anything.

As for your job they can not get rid of you especially if you have any type of disabiltiy if they do you can win a tribunal they have to put special equipment in place to assist you, but I would talk to your manager and explain the problems you are having.

Good luck my wife gets this also and she says it is difficult in crowds and she feels awful keep having to ask what people say, but she is used to it now.

I hope we get better weather with the new year I am getting rained out.

Good luck to everyone with respective visa applications.

I've been using Otex - Thanks for the recomendation ksand24 - and it helped a lot, though I'm still not 100%, so I gave up on dealing with doctors for it for now because I had other things going on in my life and didn't have time.

Then last week, to my surprise, I found an appointment card in the post, for an appointment with an ENT nurse at the hospital. I guess the nurse I saw at my GP's surgery did follow up on it when she returned from her holiday.

Just to follow up. I had my ears vacuumed and everything is annoyingly loud now. It seems that I can't use the regular ear-cleaning procedure provided at my GP's surgery because my ear canals are too tiny.

In the future as soon as I have the slightest loss of hearing I'll go to my GP right away.

I"m glad it's all better! I bet it must feel so much louder since you can actually hear now!

Ear syringing using big blasts of warm water used to be the standard cure in the UK. They are reluctant to do this now for fear of creating further pain and possible damage as it can be quite an aggressive procedure. As one who occasionally gets blocked ears i do it myself. I put some ear drops in for a few days (Otex or similar),and i have purched over the counter at a chemist,a good capacity plastic syringe. I then get over the bathroom sink with a towel, fill the sink with some warm soapy water and gently syringle myself. Patience is required but you can work at your own pace and ensure that it isnt uncomfortable. It works.

My ears get so plugged up that I lose my balance and get nauseous. About once a year, I need a serious irrigation. My surgery doesn't even do irrigations; they refer you to another clinic at set days and times - not at all convenient for working people. So I do what a doctor in the US told me years ago - I use ear drops for a couple days, and then use a Water Pik (on gentle setting) to remove the wax. Ear candles are also good as they soften up the wax before you syringe or use the water pik, but they are very expensive over here (Holland & Barrett's sell them) and awkward to do by yourself. I'm sure the doctors here would have fits about using the Water Pik, but it works for me.

Good grief I never knew getting your ears unblocked could be so difficult. I had mine done a couple of months ago. I put olive oil drops in them for a week then went to see the nurse at our GP surgery and she used the water jet thingie to unblock them.  It was no problem at all.

What's a Water Pik?

Some people have problems that cause their ears to get blocked up more easily, and makes the wax harder to remove. Personally, I have a small head and therefore tiny ear canals, so the wax can't escape.  I wear pre-teen size eyeglasses and dentists always comment about how small my my mouth is for an adult.

I have a coworker whose ear hairs are backwards and draw stuff into her ears instead of keeping it out. She also has problems with hearing loss due to blocked up ears.
